“Good Afternoon to All,
After the Public Meeting held in Stillwater MN, Coast Guard District Eight has been working closely with other Coast Guard districts and the Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to find a viable option for the St. Croix River. This collaboration has yielded two options. Both of the options hinge upon a hydrographic survey of the St Croix River being completed by the USACE prior to setting any aids to navigation. When this survey becomes available to the Coast Guard we will make our decision on how to best mark the waterway. The USACE survey is currently scheduled to be completed no later than 14 MAY 2010.
If the hydrographic survey indicates that there is sufficient channel width and depth for the WYACONDA to safely transit the river, the first option will be to mark the river with daybeacons. This option allows for the aids to remain year round. The exact location and number of fixed aids will be determined after reviewing the completed USACE hydrographic survey.
If the hydrographic survey indicates that there is not sufficient channel width and depth for the WYACONDA to safely transit the river, the Coast Guard will coordinate with the Ninth District to use a Trailerable Aids to Navigation Boat (TANB) from one of their aids to navigation units. The TANB will set seasonal floating aids to navigation. This will allow for the setting of the aids in a manner which is safe and in compliance with our current policies and procedures. The exact location and number of floating aids will be determined after reviewing the completed USACE hydrographic survey.
Respectfully,
Austin Glass, ENS
USCG District 8″
