Ok, fess up. Who was fishing south of the 94 bridge about 100′ from open water? You guys are nuts! Wow, you have bigger ones than I do for sure! I’m going fishing right now, but not there….

Nuts?

There was about 20-30 people out there 2 weekends ago. It’s nuts that people dont know what kind of ice they are on because what is frozen one day out there can be wide open within a few hours given the conditions. I’ll fish next to the open water……just not out there
February 20, 2010 at 1:59 pm #844308I saw that yesterday too and took a double take.
I drive over the bridge twice a day and I’m noticing the open water is getting wider and longer. To me, that would mean the ice is getting thinner.
I was told once in a very public way, that “people have been fishing there for 100’s of years. Get a helmet if it bothers you.”
Must be a real good bite!
February 20, 2010 at 3:27 pm #844341Are a few fish worth that? I can never understand. You take a risk for a reason and expect a good return. No way is that one worth it.
February 20, 2010 at 3:56 pm #844350If I were going to take a risk, I would rather try to cut the corner with the dogleg at 240 yards and a driver in my hands!!! Sorry to bring golf to the table in a fishing forum!!!

February 20, 2010 at 7:57 pm #844396Some of the criks are starting to open up and the woodpeckers are hammering–you know what that means
February 20, 2010 at 11:58 pm #844432If I were to go there, I’d bring the long pole and fly rod. I mean really, if you’re going to do it, do it well. Another cell phone down the hole for me today, couple pike that I can’t fillet for crap, oh well.
That said, it was sure pretty out there! And I have really tired twins and dog that may crash out early….
FW, you awake?
February 21, 2010 at 1:27 am #844456Today I fished Shore Slough at Lansing. As I crossed the bridge this A.M. the was solid ice north of the bridge for about 100 yards. Fished till about 3:00 and the water was fully open all the way to the bridge and many open spots south of the bridge. You can put a boat in at the Power Plant at Genoa and go all the way to Lansing by now.
February 21, 2010 at 3:57 am #844495If rivers do not humble a man, nothing will. Kind of like golf, but that is a whole other thread lately!
February 22, 2010 at 2:55 pm #844803Nobody has ever gone through so it cant be that bad. The only reason I dont try it is the loooong walk out.
February 22, 2010 at 3:27 pm #844812I guess I don’t see the problem here. How different is where they are fishing than below the lock and dam? I’m guessing they know what they’re doing and what the situation is as far as the ice is concerned.
And if the Lord decides it’s your turn, he’s going to get you whichever way he pleases.
You guys sound a lot like the media at the begining of the ice season when they were announcing how stupid and dangerous being on new ice was when all along you knew exactly what you were doing.
Right??
Let em be.buck-slayerPosts: 1499February 22, 2010 at 5:27 pm #844862I never said they didn’t know what they were doing, just said they have bigger ones than I do! What’s nuts to me might be totally normal to someone else, but typically it is the other way around.
February 23, 2010 at 9:02 am #845135I’ll make my way out there some day I am sure but this year my comfort level with the ice just hasnt been there as years past. Typically where I fish I would nearly bottom my auger out….not this year.
Each to their own if they want to be out there, so be it. Yes no one has gone thru thankfully but you know what happens one person goes out who is experienced, then 2-3 other experienced people go out then the guy who just dont know but has seen the experienced out there goes out and next thing ya know……we have all seen it happen and again it is a river with current so extreme caution should be used by those who are “nuts” enough to venture out there. River ice conditions are constantly changing.
February 24, 2010 at 4:30 pm #845686I’m siding with them be nuts!
But as JJ said, the ice has not been as thick or consistant as in years past. The current can and will change the thickness in that area especially now.
BUT, i would like crawl out there maybe after we have had a good hard freeze for about two months.Maybe next year?
Oh, and some who know me say i’m nuts too. Just for other reasons
