Bite was better….

….today. I think this low pressure turned a switch on in the fish, though I have never been one to believe that fish are pressure sensitive. I am starting to believe that pressure systems do affect the fish below the ice.

Things are shaping up nicely regardless. The ice is getting thick and the fishing is getting better. I fished the Croix for 2 1/2 hours today and iced 8 decent crappies, nothing picture worthy but a sure sign that things are turning around and the bite is getting better.

I, too, had a decent bite on Pool 8. I must have hit the tail end of a really good one as the gills were hammering a pimple (naked and with spikes). That only lasted for about 40 minutes and then it was back to the gill pill. A bonus Stripped Bass made it top side.

I forgot to add I was fishing in 38-40FOW using medium sized fatheads and large crappie minnows tipped with a demon jig. Color and size of the jig didnt really matter as those fish were on the chew

My take… (which ended up being kind of long )

Actually part of the “job” of the lateral line in a fish is to sense pressure, relatively/evolutional speaking it’s probably more related to pressure changes a fish feels from changing depths, but the atmospheric changes effect it too. High pressure tends to give the fish a “headache” and much more negitive in the short term, where as falling tends to make for a good bite. “Longterm” (longer than a day) fish seem to go back to “normal” with a steady barometer.
