So I was sitting at home today and decided 2 things are going to happen with this front that is supposed to move thru tonight. 1: fishing is going to be good today & 2: what little good ice that is on the Croix now has the possibility of turning bad with the snow predicted. So I did the rite thing and loaded up the shack and made the drive down the street to the river.
After finding a spot on the H20 that was not a far walk and in the zone I drilled 8 holes, the holes went from 30FOW rite up to 15 FOW, after that I started hole hopping with the flasher and in the 4th hole I checked the depth was 30′ and it had fish suspended from 15 on down to hugging the bottom. After checking the remaining holes I went back to the 4th and set-up shack. I dropped my line down and it kept going and going fish on .
I fished from 3:00pm to 5:00pm , caught 13 black crappies (and missed 6) ranging from 8″ on up to 11″ no real big slabs that the Croix is known to produce but it sure felt great to be pulling some fish thru 3″-4″ of very clear ice. The crappies were mostly hugging the bottom very tightly with a few suspended swimming thru here and there. Demon jigs tipped with med. to large fatheads produced best as they wanted nothing to do with small crappie minnows. I also caught a few on a glow green Ratso. After coaxing these fish up off the bottom 1-2′ they would lightly bite, I had 2 that just crushed it when the rod was set down and by the time I got to the rod they were gone. The crappies are on the move and swimming around the basin, if a guy wanted to catch alot of these fish in a short period of time he would stay mobile and move with the school. I didnt do this as I was unsure of the ice so I sat it out and waited for the school to swim back thru.
Not sure how bad the snow we get tonight is going to affect the ice but I do know that I will be alot more careful about going on the river after tonight. Good Luck and be safe
