All males

I’ve been able to get out on a few trips lately on my own (money aside, very nice to do that btw )and bag some fish. Seeing as I’ve caught no big fish, but have bagged fish limits, it caught my attention that of the fish I cleaned both sauger and walleye had no eggs present.

Very strange, as many of you know, walleyes and saugers can start making eggs by mid september. So I find it very interesting that I’ve been getting all males to bite these last trips? I am fishing different locations miles apart, so that’s not the explanation.

Thinking of cold water parallels (not that cold actually currently 48 degree surface water temp)there are times on the Croix ice fishing that when you jigg up them nice eater walleyes that they are all female, (sub 20″ mind you), so these things happen, from time to time. A curiosity to me no doubt.

I wonder if this crazy weather is affecting the females this year. I know over the course of 4 days last week I clean a couple dozen walleye and Sauger for people and only one was full of eggs. All the fish were 16 to 18 inchers and on a normal year there would have been more with eggs. The fact water temps were warmer in September than August maybe delayed their start. I really have no idea but I have noticed the same thing on Pool 4.
