This summer my outboard suffered catastophic failure, with the economy and two kids in college I had to make the decision to hold off purchasing a new motor.

After 6 weeks with no angling my wife and I decide to float the St. Croix below Osceola. The smallmouth fishing was really good for numbers and size. The fish were holding on deep edges of rock points, current seams with any visible rocks. Mostly used tubes.

When my wife asked me if it was good to be out again it was easy to say yes but knowing the fishing was so good and only getting better and still without a motor the answer was also no.

River traffic was minimal, weather was very nice, flow is good and the smallies agreeable.

    Go get um!

Thats a nice stretch of river Fred. Did you see what looks to be part of a old sunken boat about a 1/4 mile south of Osceola? Not much left of it. Just some large metal brackets sticking out of the water. We where about 2 miles north of Osceola on Sunday swimming with the kids. Think our days of swimming this summer are numbered but hoping to get one more trip in this weekend. Caught a few small mouth off the shore. Had one get hung up on bottom out in the river and the kids talked me into swimming for it. That was a experience rooting around a old long about 6′ under trying to get a fish un hooked. Once he got unhooked it kept jumping around me as I tried to swim in. The kids where rolling as they laughed so hard.

Shoot me a call if you need a boat ride Fred.

Further downriver the railroad bridge area looked really fishable and I’d expect you would have some walleyes in the deeper neck down areas around their. Even saw a few muskie crusing the shallows.

One thing I wanted to see was when I am on the water again would I be able to take my boat down river then back. This seems doable.

    Very nice water!

I think we are going to head south of Osceola this weekend towards the train bridge. You could get your boat threw but plan on getting out a few times and pushing threw the shallow spots. I mainly run my jon boat up that way and even have to push that from time to time.

Looking forward to saturday. It should be a great time up there.
