Windy on the Croix

Judging by the last report it’s been exactly 1 month since I been on the Croix. I got out there about 7am with trolling on the mind after a great day of trolling pool 4 yesterday. When I got to MY first spot it had a marker bouy on it and a boat 25-30 yards away so out of respect I moved away from the bouy and boat, observed that they were drifting and their drift pattern which started at their marker bouy and dropped my lines down into the depths of 24 FOW after trolling upstream about 20 yards out and up from the bouy I turned cross river again to be about 20 yards upstream from said bouy and once I got lines straight and going I got a huge hit in 26 FOW it was a nice 23″ walleye that found his way to my #5 Firetiger JSR. A quick photo with the cell phone and back in she went. Well the photo didnt turn out due to no memory when I uploaded it to the computer well you’ll see. After I got the lure out of the net and line untangled from the thrashing I found my trail on the H2OC and headed back cross stream when a 20″ walleye found my Perch colored Reef Runner Rip Shad in about 26FOW. The fishing in this area was hot I pulled three 14″ walleye, one 16″ and an 18″ before the wind got the best of me so I headed downstream to find some water out of the wind. On my boat ride downstream I got to say hello to Turk as I passed by, Turk good to see you. I got out of the wind and set the lines out again to pull some short saugers so on downstream I go again which resulted in nothing but being in more wind. I thought I would head back to spot #1 and when I did the boat was gone but my H2OC trail was there so I tried trolling it again but the wind was very windy even more so than earlier so I called it a day. Not a bad day at all after not fishing the Croix for a month. Thanks to some tips from Turks latest report and a little knowledge of the river I was able to put together a pretty good day.

Actually no. I am kind of shocked now that you mention it. 1 sheepie was the only other thing I caught other walleye and sauger. Did the smallies make it out that deep yet? I thought they hung around the 18 to 20 FOW range

Your trolling a #5 jointed shad rap in 24 FOW? So these fish were suspended or were you 3-waying?
    Way to go.

Lead core will reach these depths however a good friend of mine at Everts told me to use a 3-way with a 2-3oz weight and 5-6′ of lead line to the lure. I my self was trolling approx. 1.8-2.2 mph with the 2oz. weight and 6-7′ lead line from the 3-way swivel to the lure. It was very productive for me

    interesting

    Ferny,
I was having no problem getting down to those levels with a #5 and lead line. I run about 10 ft of braided and then 3 colors of lead then actually have some 14 lb mono after that.

    JJ,

Nice report and way to get them! I got a good idea where those came from, only because I remember the buoy that he used to mark the spot you mentioned. BTW – good to see you as well!

Turk you seen which direction I came from and if you seen someone with a marker bouy out that’d more than likely be the spot. How you’d you do after you moved downstream from where I seen you the first time? wait, let me guess slow
