Launch Rule Changes (wisc side across boomsite)

I called the city of Prescott to ask for my renewal permit for Spring Lake launch (I believe that is the name) located across from the boomsite on the Croix. Minnesota residents paid $25 annual, Wisc residents paid $0 last year. It is a gravel, shallow launch run by the city.

I was told that permits will now cost $50 per year (I believe for both MN and WI residents) or you can pay $5 in cash for each launch at a to be installed pay box. Existing permits are valid until May 31. The new fees are to provide for patroling, etc.

Here is the big change. I have always bought the permit but noticed that many users did not and took a chance that they might be towed. I was told by one person the other day that they have not had a permit in several years and never been towed. I follow the rules since my luck is usually against me. Anyway, for those that take the risk the city hired a deputy to patrol the launch and “will tow” your vehicle! The city said it would cost about $400 if you get towed.

The city person told me that the word should spread quickly for violators after a few vehicles are towed. I could not image my truck and trailer being towed together, plus the hassle of “what to do with the boat” until getting truck and trailer back. The city person was very nice on the phone. Hopefully, the launch will not be as popular as the boomsite since it will now be open to the public for daily fee. Crap – this was my last repriev from crowded ramps!

    Heads up.

You have me kind of confused on the location. Is this the Wisconsin side of the St Croix launch north of Stillwater / Houlton across from the MN DNR Boomsite launch north of Stillwater?

You said you called Prescott? If it is the launch I am thinking of, isn’t it a Houlton, WI owned launch?

Sorry, I tried to edit my post but the time limit won’t let me. You are correct in that it is the launch near Houlton, about a 1/4 mile north of the Stillwater bridge on the wisconsin side. The city of Somerset (part of their territory) has control over it, which always surprised me since the city is so far away from the launch. If you need clarification call 715-247-3470. I had called them to ask why my renewal form had not been mailed out to me yet and they told me about the changes.

Sorry for the confusion – I am getting old….but not too old to raise my rod.
