Picked through 2 flats myself yesterday…
Nice big flat crawlers though, some of them were snake like.

Bedding will be mixed by 3:15 today.
April 23, 2009 at 2:03 pm #770559I went picking crawlers Sunday night. I got 15 dozen in a little over 45 minutes. Some big ones, some small. If it rains like they are predicting this weekend, it might be decent picking again this weekend.
April 23, 2009 at 2:36 pm #770568Your lucky BZZ. None around my house. The topsoil was raped when they built my neighborhood. Pretty common here in Maybury.
I ordered mine from Blue Ribbon. Closer to Cottage Grove would be Backwoods in Newport.April 23, 2009 at 2:54 pm #770577My neighborhood doesn’t have much for crawlers either. I go down to the older part of Hudson. They are thicker than flies on *(^&&^ down there. I’ve been picking them down there for about 30 years now. It sucks getting old.
April 23, 2009 at 3:13 pm #770579Just curious as to keeping bulk crawlers…
1. Do you keep them in dirt or the worm bedding you can buy?
2. Do you need to add any food to it?
3. How often do you need to change the bedding or dirt? Thanks guys!
April 23, 2009 at 3:57 pm #770594I use the frabill worm bedding. It keeps the boat cleaner than using dirt. It already has food in it. I didn’t change my bedding last year, just tossed any crawlers that didn’t look good. I kept my crawlers for over 2 monthes. I ended up releasing the remaining ones once I wasn’t using crawlers for bait anymore.
April 23, 2009 at 4:24 pm #770602thank you I am going to buy a bulk amount of crawlers and dont’ want to kill them in my first couple weeks…
April 23, 2009 at 4:32 pm #770604You’ll need a cool spot to store them. Some will say you must have a frig but that is incorrect. A frig is nice but I dont have room for one so i have always kept them on the cement floor in dark area of basement. Never had a problem so it must be cool enough. Did this as a kid as well. Any out of the way spot maybe even near the block wall and not near any heat source in the basement should work fine.
April 23, 2009 at 6:25 pm #770631Thanks guys, I have a fride in my garage I can dedicate space to for this! Hope I can make it next Thursday to the opener party and have some with you guys for all the helpful information!
April 23, 2009 at 10:22 pm #770685I live in “old downtown”. I may have to go in the yard and do some pickin’
doubt if it will be a minnow bite this year on opener.April 24, 2009 at 12:56 pm #770754SteveO,
Its best to go after a heavy rain. The later you go, the easier they are to pick also. If you go at 9:30, they are only partially out of the ground. By 11:00, you will find many of them totally out of the ground. But with your cat-like reflexes, you probably won’t have any troubles grabbing them either way.
April 24, 2009 at 6:04 pm #770835Or if your neighbors water their lawn try there also. I started to water mine and will be checking it out tonight. I also dug my recycling bin into the ground with about an inch sticking out. I fill mine with only maple leaves and the crawlers love that all summer long. I drill holes in the bottom for drainage and put screen down and also a screen over the top to keep them from escaping.
