Just a friendly reminder that walleye and sauger DOES NOT OPEN until may 2nd. I’m not sure if it was anyone from here but I drove by some known walleye holes, that DO NOT hold panfish due to the current, and noticed 4 or more boats on these known walleye holes. I was very, very close to calling the DNR. We have open walleye fishing on pool 3 & 4 which is very close. If I see this happening again I more than likely will be making the call to the DNR. Let the fish spawn in peace that is why the season is closed and in a couple of weeks it will be open.

Oh yeah you can also legally fish walleye and sauger on Pool 2 catch and release only.
April 19, 2009 at 12:07 pm #769636Now you are confusing me, you mean there are walleye in the St. Croix

Hi ho silver! I wouldn’t sweat it unless you have more proof they are harassing the saugeye.
Prove to me they are not!!!
WELL KNOWN walleye hole + boats sitting on top of it vertical jigging, good current seam near by ……
You dont have to be the lead cashier at the local Wal-store to figure out 1+1=2
I fish the river plenty enough to assume I knew what they were doing.
April 19, 2009 at 12:42 pm #769644I seen the same thing on Monday. It made me wonder if they knew what the laws are.? I don’t want to say they were in the wrong, but it happens from time to time.
April 19, 2009 at 12:48 pm #769645JJ,
I completely agree, go to pool two, three, or four for walleye. The St. Croix is closed for walleye.
TurkApril 19, 2009 at 1:09 pm #769652I’m not trying to be the fish police and I am not trying to discourage people from being out and fishing but when you make it more than obvious in a spot that is WELL known for walleye, I have zero tolerance for poachers. It is a privelage to fish and this is a protected resource that is why it is closed for a few months. Just trying to remind people that walleye and sauger on the Croix opens on May 2nd.

Maybe they should shut the whole river down.

How about thursday, watched a couple guys pulling cranks upriver around bayport?
HUGE crappies maybe?
I know there are a lot of boats out chasing White Bass. You will see a lot of guys throwing cranks and even trolling for them. I was out chasing silvers Wednesday afternoon – threw everything in the box and still got skunked.
April 19, 2009 at 2:39 pm #769640just wondering why you would fish for something that ends in *ss purposely
April 19, 2009 at 4:43 pm #769695Very hard to prove if someone is targeting a specific species of fish.Doesnt matter if its a Proven walleye spot.Silvers hang around plenty of good walleye spots IE current seams etc.You would hope people would know better but that isnt always the case.
April 19, 2009 at 4:57 pm #769704The water temp is almost 60! Pretty sure they are spawned out…. And besides let the DNR enforce the laws if someone is actually keeping fish out of season. I have been throwing cranks for silvers the past few days and cant pick whats going to hit my bait….. Just so happens I have hooked a few skinny post spawn walleyes. What do you expect a person to do? Not fish, C&R isnt harmful by any means. Find something better to police
April 19, 2009 at 5:16 pm #769705Great reminder JJ…
You’re kinda nice, I would have called the dnr and posted afterward.

Read all my posts in this thread. Once again I am not trying to police anything. Vertical jigging in a well known walleye spot I am going to guess you are more than likely jigging for walleye. I think now this is the 3rd time I stated this. I NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT THROWING CRANKS. It doesnt matter what the temps are or if they are spawned out or not WALLEYE IS CLOSED on the Croix. And the DNR cant be every where thats why they rely on thier tip lines. It does happen if you are fishing for other species you WILL more than likely catch an “eye” perfectly harmless, it happens but when you are on the river and OBVIOUSLY fishing for walleye that is a different matter.

NO way!
I love the peaceful fishing for suckers before all the boats are out in nice weather.
As for targeting fish out of season no way wrong to do.

Yea, Jesse. I know I was out of character trying to catch one of those *ss things. I had a buddy with that wanted some to try in his smoker. I told him if I caught some I did not want any pictures taken. Ish – imagine having to take it off the hook.

Find something better to police than his home waters? Why dont you find someplace better to fish.
April 20, 2009 at 2:58 pm #769899Thanks Mike
Pools 2,3, and 4 are all open for walleye. I’m thinking that the only time some people can catch walleye on the Croix is when they are spawning and the season is closed. I myself dont have any problems catching them during the legal season.

I’ll be the judge of that.

eye_hunterPosts: 517April 20, 2009 at 3:24 pm #769922ok if you were refering to the swing bridge that was me out there. and trust me i read the regulations and i follow them. we were anchored and vertical jigging. yes we did catch one or two walleye, and but they were all released. our main targets were silvers. and they are caught this time of the year almost like walleyes. so, with that said, there were about 4 other boats with us too, we were all fishing for silvers. and also, the sturgeons were biting too. i think that alot of fish like vertical jigging in current seems this time of the year, not just walleye.
i agree that we should all follow the rules and turn in poachers. but i also hate it when people call the cops or CO’s on me for assuming things. there are many ways to catch a fish, and many fish bite many methods, so dont just assume things. we all just wanna get along here.

There’s a swing bridge out there
O.K. so then if there was NO wrong doing a visit from the DNR shouldnt be an issue in fact some of my best fishing information comes from the conversations on the water with the DNR officers. They usually keep within 3-5 ft and allow you to continue fishing and really arent a bad group of people, just doing there jobs. Shouldnt be an issue at all then if everything is legal and legit

also, since i was vertical jigging for white bass in current seams, this post made me feel real guilty. just wanted to say that.
Dont feel guilty. Your explanation enlightened us all. Good job!April 21, 2009 at 2:53 am #770100Quote:

Curious as to where you are fishing. We are seeing 49 degrees in Prescott.
April 21, 2009 at 12:51 pm #770146good question Tuck.
I had 52 in Hudson Bay and high 40’s in Prescott last Saturday. got colder the closer I got to the confluence. could be further north like Osceola perhaps? water is pretty skinny up there.April 23, 2009 at 3:11 am #770487I’m just happy to see the St. Croix crew back for another open water season and another season of open warfare on the web!!
Man it’s been too long since we’ve had a good ol St. Croix forum knock down drag out.
