Checked the ice all around the area today. Strange kind of ice this year just about everywhere I checked. I was expecting everyplace to be snow covered but that was not the case. It looks like that snowstorm left a layer of slush on all the bodies of water. That slush has frozen, so we have about 3 inches of frozen slush, a small bit of water, and then about a 1/2″ of good clear ice. When you get on the ice there is no snow on top. The ice is kind of a grey, translucent color but it is hard as a rock. That frozen slush is hard and pretty good ice. If its windy your portable is going to take off on you. I was expecting to see quite a bit of snow on the ice but that was not what I found. Most everyplace I checked is froze solid about 3 to 4 inches with no snow. I checked the river at Bayport, Lily Lake, and a couple of small ponds, all were the same. The river has a large expanse of water open in front of Sunnyside Marina down to the NSP Plant. There is an open spot right in front of the Andersen Plant access launch. Otherwise everything was froze. I found a fairly constant 3″to 4″ of ice. I plan on fishing at least by Saturday.
