Just wondering if you guys would be willing to share details about the ice out there? Is it drive-able?

Of of bayport it is 4 wheeler able.
Last week off of the park I had 8-10 inches I hope to make it out on Friday further up so I will give a post if anyone else hasn’t.Lots of wheelers out there last week but north of stillwater I had less than 2 inches at one point but that was in shallower water.
December 21, 2008 at 11:46 pm #730587On friday there were small trucks driving around. I took my super crew out on the ice but stayed close to shore to let my dogs run with no issues. I had 9″ on the 13th so I would guess there would be a couple more inches after recent weather.

North of Stillwater is really only for the experienced ice guy wouldn’t you say Aaron?
December 22, 2008 at 5:00 am #730670The ice on the Croix is tricky right now. I would stick to foot traffic for now, with all this snow. Some D-Horn drove out in Prescott with a truck of some sort. One set of tracks going out…none coming back. He probably followed his own tracks back…

I like to live on the wild side!
I fished backwaters and main river areas stating north of Osceola and did a lot of hole hopping doing 20 minutes no fish show no more fishing run. It was a very interesting day checking out areas that I have fished open water but never ice. The springs are very dangerous with this much snow they can be hard to see and I really should not have been alone but I was the only fool to try it.
To make a short statement……YES north of Stillwater on the river is not for newbies or wheelers!

December 22, 2008 at 6:44 pm #730815Well the ice IS NOT CONSISTANT!!!! It varied (that I verified) from 8″ to 11″ with SLUSH POCKETS (scary driving). I highly do not recommend driving on the Croix yet. I know people are doing it, I did it but I got VERY VERY LUCKY. I personally would stick to foot traffic, ATV, or snowmobile.
PLEASE BE SAFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There is no fish in that river worth a vehicle through the ice with a person in it
December 22, 2008 at 9:34 pm #730877JJ did you loose any more jigg’n raps today??
I never made it out yesterday, rough night at in-laws christmas celebration!
I plan to go tomorrow, give me a call..2:30
SPOT x or xyz??December 23, 2008 at 8:38 pm #731179I’ve NEVER seen anybody fish North of the Stillwater bridge to the rest area! If you watch the way it freezes near the boomsite you’ll see why…YIKES! I always thought that area would be good for tip-ups but am too chicken (old) I wouldn’t mind trying the 30′ hole either but then again I’m way too chicken! Please be very careful while exploring the Croix it seems to take it’s share of people on ice and in summer!
Is it my imagination or is shanty town further south this year?
Ferny.
December 23, 2008 at 9:24 pm #731186so I probably shouldn’t drive my Yukon out there yet? Where does a guy park if he’s gotta drag his shack out there – I have no problem staying on the MN side…

SHANTY TOWN, The one rite across from bayport is in the same area and same with the one near the power lines
December 24, 2008 at 12:24 am #731230FYI to the newbies reading this thread.
There is open water near the Power Lines.
Guys, as a wise guide told me a few years ago…it’s easy to forget that people new to the river and it’s inherent dangers read our posts. I assumed that everyone knows where the thin ice/open water spots are. It was pointed out that many people read these and without just a little knowledge of the area, their trip could be their last one.
I’ll step off my soap box and return to my log in the catfish forum.
December 24, 2008 at 3:35 am #731282(oh that post)
As BK stated there is open water in the high line area all year long and also near Hudson
