I was out last night chasing St Croix cats. Last night was the best weather night yet of the entire season. The river is stable at it’s summertime normal pool elevation of 675.5′. I’ve been finding the mid-week fishing is best because of the wild weekend boat traffic. Even fishing mid-week you still have to put up with some crazy cruiser traffic until they go to bed about 9:00pm.
I picked up two flatheads last night, one a nice 35 lb fish and the other small about 14 lbs. Both fish just hammered bullheads. It was not a finicky bite – they grabbed those bullies and kept on going in long, clicker screaming runs. With it getting darker earlier the bite comes at a reasonable hour – I picked up the 35 lb fish at 9:30pm and the 14 lb fish at 11:30pm and ended the night with a 26″ channel cat at 12:30am. I kept at it until 2:00am and then headed home. It is getting to be the late season time for cats and this bite should pick up over the next few weeks.
Sturgeon season starts on September 6th. I like chasing sturgeon but I’m not ready to give up on cats yet.
