    Out of ~110 people.

1st Eddy Philpot wins big eye with 27 incher.

2nd Turk wins heavy stringer with 15+ pounds I think there were 2 over 4 lbs.

    Both are Repeat winners!

Big ugly fish (I didn’t catch name) was 35+lb cat

Everybody got food and a door prize and several got 2.

These aren’t exact #’s but it’s what I can remember.

It was a very windy day!

    RiverEyes,

In past years Jason Hankes my partner and I stuck it out and played bumper boats and toughed out some fish and got lucky with nice ones…This year we couldn’t turn anything over a 19” eye and some quality 17.5” saugers when we stayed with the other boats. We had maybe nine pounds. I had a notion that the wind might drive the baitfish onto some good runs that have a good amount of shallower reef structure before the deep break, in a place that I’d be surprised to see more than two anglers… So we motored up and low and behold only one boat two hundred yards south…it took a while but we caught two 24”ers from this spot and that made the difference and completed a solid 15 pound stringer weight.

I learned something new…see I am under the assumption that the narrows are the best on the river (all narrows) but last Saturday proved that as all fishing theories go there are some holes in the net of each and every angling theory (if you look hard enough). Playing bumper boats even in prime locations does not mean big fish.

Anyway we mostly stayed with crankbaits and found shiny blue chrome finished raps a top producer as it has been in the past.

The River Rat is a tournament for charity, however it is the St. Croix biggest and at least eight to ten area guides compete in it every year- entered are also over 20 local anglers (that I know of, I’m sure there are more) that normally kick tail on the St. Croix and with that said it’s a thrill for Jason and I to finish well.

    Keep Catchin’

Congrats on the win Turk! Lets go fishing soon. I wanna learn how to use those blade baits that we talked about.
