Just heard the DNR is holding a meeting wed night at Lake Elmo High school. I Guess they want the river to have a maximum speed of 40 mph durring day and 20 mph at night. Anyone else here about this? I think it is at 6:30 or 7:00 if you are interested.

    Keep on fishin!

I don’t think Lake Elmo has a high school???
Maybe it’s Stillwater High School on So. of Hwy. 36 1 block and Hwy. 5?
I can only go 32 so it wouldn’t affect me unless it was dark. I don’t mind the speed as much as the giant cruiser wakes!

I did not find anything on the Minnesota DNR website. I suspect it’s a different government agency because a state DNR does not have authority to set a speed limit on the St Croix.

There has been a lot of discussion regarding 40/20 speed limit on the Croix. I suspect it has a very good chance of passing into law. I do not however think it will do anything to achieve it’s goal in lowering boating deaths on the river.

People will still get drunk and crash boats no matter what speed limit you impose….short of a total no wake. And that may not be too far off in the future!

The meeting is being held at Oakland Jr. High in Lake Elmo on Wednesday, Sept. 17th. I am not sure what time. I found the article on http://www.rivertowns.net.

Have to agree with Jon J. on this one. This has been well publicized intent for some time now. I too, wonder how effective any legislation will be but in most cases, I welcome the effort. I grew up on that river…………..and I’ve seen some friends buried. Doing nothing isn’t a good answer for the Croix issues and knowing the heartbeat of impulse, influence, and carelessness…………….I’d rather see it investigated than ignored. Still………….I have doubts on the desired results. Sometimes higher restrictions backfire into more incidents.

I think it was Mike W. that said “all boats over 14 feet should be outlawed”. I added “unless they were fishing boats”.
Sorry if I miss quoted you Mike.

At the risk of starting a whole new discussion….although speed is a factor, it’s my humble opinion that not putting a limit on common sense would be more effective.

I would like to see the results of the meeting. Hmmm…common sense tells me I should just go….

That wasn’t my quote Brian. Mine is ( He has a big boat, He must know what he is doing. Right?)
That idea of limiting boat size is interisting. No more big cruisers. What a happy day that would be.

    Thanks, Lindy

I to could not make it, but I did talk to a few people that were there. They said that 99% of the people there were apposed of the speed limit, and they felt that there was now way this was going to take affect. Also mentioned was a NO anchoring law, this was also nullified, thanks Turk

I made the meeting and was very upset at a proposal to ban anchoring in ” the navigational channel”. This ban would extinguish all of the historical anchoring hotspots in the river narrows (From north of Stillwater, the channel, Afton area, Kinni narrows, and Prescott narrows all the choice spots)! Anchoring in the narrows is a self-regulating situation as nobody anchors in the narrows on really busy days and on the light traffic days the big boats always politely drive around, this situation is not a problem.

Also the anchoring proposal listed no anchoring within 50′ of a shoreline?? No stop, anchor, and cast to crappies???

So I got on the microphone and likely made an impassioned fool out of my self but what’s new!

Also at this meeting, was a proposal to possibly create a new slow no wake in front of Sunnyside Marina, and lengthen the Prescott slow no wake.

The organizers of this meeting “the body or party” is a steering committee, established how? I don’t know? How they are elected, again I don’t know? When they accept proposals and the criteria to make proposals, again I don’t know?

They “steer” both WI and MN DNR’s and the Nat’l Park Service in decision-making, their weight, or pull??

The good. I saw a proposal to make illegal being within or throwing a wake within 100’ of an “unpowered boat”. Unpowered is my word for it; if I had the paperwork, I would use the correct language, maybe anchored, floating or slow moving is the right word.
Now that is a good idea, it can be dangerous out there when big cruisers fly by full throttle within 40’ while you are running your bowmount and jigging!!

Still though lots of question as you can see……
