Made it out yesterday afternoon to do some sturgeon fishing. Been my goal to get at least one sturgeon this year. Went out of Bayport and found some baitfish in 31 fow. I had some crawlers and my partner was using sucker. Did I mention the wind and waves WOW!! So we were getting ready to move when finally I hook into one. I set the hook and the fight was on. My partner went to reel up so he could help land my fish. Just as he went to reel up I hear him yell that he has one too!! Both our rods are bent over as we can do nothing but laugh. His fish came up off the bottom and surfaced next to the boat as he is yelling “Its a sturgeon”. I saw the fish surface and then right back to the bottom. I couldnt move my fish and we were thinking maybe i had a larger one on. We estimated his fish in the 38-40″ range. We knew there was no way to land either fish and could do nothing but enjoy the thought of a double. We continued fighting the fish, only to have them tangle with eachother under the boat His line broke so we went to the task of landing my fish, which I was still unable to bring up. We were going to raise the rear anchor, just as he went to raise the anchor we realized I had just gotten tangled around the line. So he brings up the anchor slowly as we realize it is just a channel cat. Not that that is a bad thing, but if I would have realized that we could have boated his fish first. Needless to say it will be an experience to remember forever anyway. Thanks to all those that have given me some pointers along the way. Now I am hooked and can’t wait to get out again!!

Frozen shad works very well too. Moore’s bait has it

I wouldn’t use anything but shad. The bigger ones prefer it. Keep it fresh too!

I’ve had plenty of luck on crawlers and sucker–sheephead, too, for that matter. I think it depends what they want on a particular day. Shad produces most of the time on the Croix, though.
