About the time you thought you’ve seen everything on the river… I was coming back to Afton from the Kinni just before dusk last night. Everyone had their lights on. We were in a streach of the river, i’m guessing that was a quarter mile wide (2nd power wires South of Afton).

Right smack dab in the middle of the river, I see 2 floats close together, like the kind the DNR uses for holding up a gill net. But as we get closer, I see arms waving. It was two (14year old?) girls trying to swim across the river!
Most of you know it’s bad enough to be on the river with a fishing boat on a weekend much less swimming at dark without anything but a two piece bathing suit.

I asked them if they were ok, and they said they were but they didn’t consider the big boats not seeing them and their wakes. So, in the backend of the boat they came.

When I was about 2 blocks away from shore they wanted to go back in and swim to shore. I tryied to talk them out of it while still moving closer to shore. They said thanks for the lift a dove over.

They told me they are good swimmers and not tired. I told them there are a lot of dead people that said the same thing.

Maybe I’m just getting too conservitive in my old age!

Does anyone know if the radar on a cruiser would pick up two small targets (heads)?

    Brain,
I’ve done some stupid stuff while growing up on the river, but never anything that stupid. Me at my young age, would have given those girls a big chewing out. Way to keep a heads up. Just goes to show you anything can be floating on the river.

I saw those two swimmers too! Same location only they appeared to be swimming upstream just off the MN shore near the afton state park. Boat traffic was heavy, we waved one boat away from that area & then finally saw them get on shore. They must not understand how dangerous that is. I hope someone is able to talk some sense into them, cause that’s just a deadly accident waiting to happen.
