I was finally able to make it out on the Croix again today. Oh and what a day it was. The plan was to search for the walleys that seem to have disappeared. To make a long story short, we did not find them. Tried everything under the sun and we could not hook one up.
This brings me to my other part of the trip. My buddy being the big musky guy that he is, decides that we should troll for awhile. Seeing that I have never held one, I figured why not, so off we go. Well about 30 minutes in I get “hooked” up. Big fish, I get it to the boat, I get it in the net. Then…the fish thrashes, lure in the net, buddy loses his grip on the net, fish swims away The threshold was soooooo close, and to top it off we figured that it would have gone between 44-47″.
Yeah it has not been a good year, biggest smallie lost (22″), biggest buck missed, and now this. Got to love it, things that are easy just dont seem like that much fun???

At the end of last years sturgeon season, I was guiding a young lady and her friend. We hooked into a sturgeon that started taking out drag on my tightened down Garcia 7000. From the time she picked up the rod until the hook came out, it just kept going. It was the only time I’ve ever thought about lifting anchor to follow a fish. (I’m not using walleye gear!)

Since that day, I’ve been dreaming of the next time we hook in to something that large? Strong? Big? This thing made a 64 inch sturgeon feel like a hand size gill on a walleye rod….

That’s what keeps a guy going back!
