My wife and I fished the Bayport – Stillwater area this morning from 1000 to 1:00 pm. Water was beautiful, temp 78 degrees, level is at 675.4 which is low and clear. Caught 9 smallmouth (2 nice size, 7 small). They liked the 2″ Storm Wildeye Swim Shad in the pearl color. Had a couple of gar chasing the baits around the boat for a while – aggresive little buggers. Never caught one but they grabbed the baits and ran and then spit them out. We had a fun morning on the river, about 12:30 pm the big boats started to make the fishing a little bit of a challenge so we headed home.

You know, I think it was right close to the time you were getting on the water that I looked out the window here at work and thought, “It’d be a nice day for to be “sick”………..develop a little “I” problem…………like “I don’t see myself working today”! Sounded like you had an alright time!

Was that swim shad all you caught fish on or were there some results on other lures too?

Hi Pup – I got one on a 3″ silver tube jig but my wife got 3 in a row on the Swim Shad so I switched to the swim shad. That 2″ pearl swim shad looks alot like the shad minnows that are schooled up in the shallows. We got all the fish in less that 3′ of water.

Comanchero15, I have a question, I’m not sure what a swim shad is, but is there a lot of lead in it and would it hurt…bad, if it “accidently” hit the back of your fishing partners head? If so, are they available at Gander Mtn?

I went down to the Kinni to see if I was ruined for life. To my amazement I wasn’t. I only had 20 minutes to fish before the family wanted to go swimming.
WI side just south of the Kinni straights outside the no wake zone. Fat Raps deep divers…(have to ask Stillakid2 what color). Picked up a 17″ sauger and a less than 15″ eye along with some silvers. They always hit when your out of time.

After I picked up the wife and kids I notice a couple fishing boats together at the confluence of the Kinni. Went a little closer to see what all the noise was about. Lucky the wife put the camera back in the boat.

This happy fella’s name is Thomas Lange Jr from Hastings. The man in the yellow shirt was another angler that offered to help by pulling the brute in. He thought it was 30+ lbs, the lenght was about 40 inches. They had a fishing trip to remember!

Thomas, this is why I don’t go in water that’s over my little toe!

Hey Brian – I take it the Pup has a habit of hitting you in the back of the head with whatever bait he is throwing. Don’t let him use those Swim Shads – they look like they might hurt. The 2″ one is kind of light but the hooks are pretty sharp. The one’s I was using I got at Walmart – the smallmouth are chasing the shad pretty aggressively and those swim shad seem to work pretty good.

    Thanks,

It’s really the other way around. I almost nailed him, but at the last minute he saw it coming and to keep it looking like an accident, after a slight delay, I said “look out”. Of course this would have been too late if I would have been on target.
We had a great day on the water, some of use caught some fish, some of us talked smart….you know…fishing!

As long as I have your attention, you do a little St Croix catt’en don’t you? The serious night stuff?

Brian – I’ve been out catfishing quite a bit this summer. I usually go out from about 6:30 pm until midnight or so. I listen to the Twins game and drown a few bullheads. It has been a great summer weather wise and the river conditions are pretty good right now. I have been catching fish but I haven’t lucked into any big ones yet. I normally fish from Hudson Swing Bridge upstream to the High Bridge.

Hey, I told when I decided to let you catch a fish that it was over! Anyway, swim shads are available almost everywhere. The 2″ models will do you fine…………I’ve got the 3″ ones already and I’ll just use those!

Or maybe the 9″ muskie size……………….hmmmm?

Nahhh………..I might need to borrow “our” boat sometime.
