I haven’t posted much recently eventhough I’ve managed a few nice outings on the Croix… Cougareye offered a nice tip the other day after I told him I was headed out Saturday morning; my wife, daughter, and her friend joined me!
Did pretty well trolling crankbaits (blue tiger Frenzy shad again!) in 10-15 fow. A chrome perch TDD was also pretty popular with the fishys… quite an assortment saw the side of the boat – sauger, walleye, smallmouth, sheephead, and even crappie were hitting on the cranks trolled around 3 mph!
We worked a few other others with livebait – all crawlers, both jigged and slip-weight rigged. We found that the crawlers needed to be right on the bottom – the jig was getting out-hit 3 to 1 over the slip-weight rig when I was running a 2 foot leader. Next time out, I’ll shorten the leader down to a foot or less…
Other than the fishing, we headed down to the Kinni for some ‘sight seeing’ and swimming… there were a LOT of boats down there, all shapes and sizes (boats too!). Later, scooted back to the Hudson Channel for a some more ‘sight seeing’ and swimming. It was very busy all over the river yesterday but with the temp pushing 95, no big surprise there!
The police boats were out in full force too and I was glad to see it. There are always a few idiots that think the rules don’t apply to them. We saw the Wash Co cops stop more than one boat heading under the I-94 bridge, probably because of ‘no wake zone’ violations…
It was a great day seeing all the facets of the Croix – the calm serenity at 4:30 am to the rowdy party scene by mid afternoon…
