Looking for a good place to pull up in the boat and get some good food. I understand PD Pappy’s in Stillwater is good but you have to tie up to the wall. Was advised to stay away from Catfish Bar and Grill (poor service, adequate food). Also heard Muddy Waters in Prescott was nice but that’s a pretty long boat ride from Hudson. Am I missing anything else out there? Just looking for a nice burger or sandwich…

King-
For Prescott, the Slip-Inn grill located right above the city dock has excellent burgers and sandwiches. Very resonably priced and I think they serve tap beer. My favorite in Prescott is Boat Drinks. They have very good frozen pizza and some of the best shrimp you could imagine. They also serve cooked oysters on the half shell topped with provalone cheese and a piece of bacon. mmmmmmmmm good.I agree that the catfish in Afton has gone down hill. The last few times I was there they treated us like WE were doing them a favor to be in the bar. Plus, $8.95 for hot wings, I think there were 8 little pigeon wings on the plate.
May 30, 2007 at 7:06 pm #576299Thanks for the recommendations Dean! I’ll keep them in mind if I head down Prescott way….
It’s too bad that there aren’t more river-side eateries on the Croix… Catfish has a great location but I don’t think they put much effort into the Bar and Grill, they’re focused on the Inn and the cruises. Might just go out cruising for a while, tie up in Hudson and go to Dick’s or Barker’s. Pier 500 is a great spot too.

May 30, 2007 at 7:07 pm #576300You could also try sunsets in Hudson, they have a nice patio or A/C inside. Food is good, but not great.
We always park by the paddle boat and walk up, we have only had to pay once in 5 years (the later you go the better).
There are also lots of other retaurants in Hudson close to that dock.
STCROIXERMay 30, 2007 at 7:17 pm #576302I’ve lived in Hudson now for a couple of years but I’ve never been to Sunsets… Might just have to give it a try!
So do you tie up to the docks by the paddle boat? I usually either just beach it by the launch or tie up to the wall (don’t know if the wall is an option, with the construction going on down there…).
May 30, 2007 at 8:26 pm #576324I cant handle being so far from my boat without someone watching it. The only place I ever consider is the Gem Bar but that is a considerable distance from Hudson. Just not many places to put your boat around the towns.

Sounds like we need to have another GTG!!!!! I got the first round!!!!
May 30, 2007 at 9:51 pm #576349A few years ago there was a houseboat anchored in the Hudson channel that sold hamburgers and snacks. I never stopped but I passed it a few times. I know boats could pull up to it and pick up food and continue on their way. I don’t know if they got shutdown because of some permit requirement or what. It didn’t last very long.
May 30, 2007 at 10:06 pm #576356I believe Sunsets in Hudson is now Pier 500. Great food. How are the docking accomodations in Stillwater. There’s many options for food/beverage there.

May 30, 2007 at 11:20 pm #576399Hey King,
I was also disappointed in the Catfish bar. But I heard that they had new mgmt so my wife and i gave it a try about a week ago. It had been about a year and a half since we had been in. Boy, what a difference in service and food. It was excellent! New menu items and the manager came over to say hello. We asked about the place and he said they brought some help in from the cities. He asked how the place could be better. We said, upgrade the Bathrooms!
We will be back again for sure. Let me know what you think. The decor was the same but a definate difference in the food and service. We had the halibut which was a new item. It was over and inch thick and panfried perfectly.May 31, 2007 at 12:05 am #576413Hey Eric,
Yeah, I figured out that the old Sunsets became Riverside and is now Pier 500! (Guess maybe Steve needs to update his directory list! ). I’ve eaten at Pier a few times and its excellent! The prices are a bit higher than I’d like but they’ve done an amazing job with the place… Definitely a must-stop location…
From what I understand in Stillwater, the marina is really cracking down on tying up at their docks so you’re limited to hitching up to the wall or going up to where the paddleboats/cruise-ships are tied up. Not really what I’m looking for…. I agree with Suzuki – I hate leaving my boat unattending and out of line-of-sight.
I understand the Afton public docks charge $5 per hour to tie up… robbery…
For tomorrow night, I’m planning on buying a bottle of two of nice wine, a loaf of french bread, some brie or camembert (spelling??? you’d think after so many years of studying French I’d know how to spell these…), a bit of olive salad, and some sausage (or I’ll just stop at Subway and buy a couple of sub sandwiches ). Drive the boat down to a quiet spot and have a nice romantic dinner with the FW (sorry Brian K, I stole that one!). I might even get some in some fishing (for walleye!) .

May 31, 2007 at 12:09 am #576417Hey Dwhale,
Thanks for the update… we might stop by there and check it out… if I do, I’ll be sure to post my opinions (too bad I didn’t sign up for the anonymous diner job oppy sent to me by email ).
I still think Hudson has some of the best dining options on the river and plenty of tie-up options between the docks, the wall, and beaching….
May 31, 2007 at 12:11 am #576420Glenn!
Hope the weather cooperates.
Dwhale, good to know. Is the $5/hr docking charge a suggestion for the attendants? I was down there last summer hanging out on the docks with the family and didn’t see people getting charged to dock. They did tip the attendants however.

May 31, 2007 at 12:31 am #576427Hey Eric…. too bad you and your better half can’t meet up with the wife and I tomorrow night… I guess ‘a good walk spoiled’ (ie, GOLF!) is an excuse, not a good excuse, but an excuse….
Everyone else: please send a PM to Cougareye and explain to him how golfing is such a waste of time….
May 31, 2007 at 7:55 pm #576769Looks like a beautiful night to ……..golf!
So, Glenn, does the Mrs. have any idea your planning a romantic excuse to fish? Springing for subway I see!! Back at ya!
May 31, 2007 at 8:08 pm #576776OK guys… go right ahead and give me a hard time…
I’ll be on the river tonight with my gal, some nice wine, some cheese, maybe an olive salad, cruising around AND I’ll be fishing! Who says you can’t have it all….
June 1, 2007 at 1:30 am #576838As to the $5 Docking fee in Afton: I havent docked thier in 2 years. I dont see any signs regarding a charge. In the past when I docked on During the week, Only 1 or 2 boats would be tied up and no attendant so I didnt pay anyone. I Typically am not out on the weekends because of the heavy boat traffic. I did dock once during the weekend a few years ago and had help tieing up from a boy. I tipped him a 5 for 2 hours. I still think it may be the same. I was by their last week fishing and saw no signs about a charge for docking.
However, Hudson dock is $5 per hour and I have used that several times because it is under continuous watch. I have no problem leaving all my fishing stuff at Hudson Pay dock.
