Hey Guy’s, Last year I picked up more largemouth (20+) on the Croix than I had in the previous 15 years total. Did anybody else notice this or was it just me fishing more for smallies during the hot summer than walleyes? I used to only pick one up every few years and only near weeds. Last year they were right in with the smallies on the rocks?

I’m not sure what area of the river you’re fishing the most often but I know there’s been a population increase of panfish and largemouth bass in recent years around the Hudson area. Lake Mallelieu has been lowered 2-3 times to fight Eurasion Milfoil and we had a series of years that floods came over the dam and interchanged populations as well. The increase in sunnies and LMB in the Hudson area is a direct connection to things happening with Lake Mallelieu. Proir to the drainings, the lake was one of WI’s best kept bass secrets! 20″ were common and numerous. Things have gotten a lot tougher since the drainings, but word is that it’s recovering well and trophy bass fishing will return to the lake again. As long as it’s connected to the Croix, there’s always the possibility of seeing a jump in LM numbers, depending on what happens at the dam.

I also noticed more largies last year. if you could find a laydown they were usually up in the branches somewhere.

I don’t know why you guys keep saying there are fish in the Croix… there aren’t any walleye, any sauger, any bass, any muskies…. only thing out there are sheephead, carp, and suckers….
