I swung by the north end of Stillwater and the river is open from the Boomsite to the north. The Boomsite Public Access is clear all the way out to the channel so you can launch and go north. The river is iced in from just below Wolf Marina to the south. There are open pockets around the Lift Bridge but then it is iced all the way down from there.
The river pool elevation is 679.3 feet today and the water temp is a cool 33 degrees. The islands are just underwater.

Time to get the boat ready.

Nice fish, now that you put it in our faces how about some specs. How big was the other one? and what were you using? We’re just catching channels over here on the Miss. Way to go in bringing in the new year, keep them pictures pouring in.

OK…..I put up the pic of the 38 pounder that I netted for CastAndBlast but I told him I deserved a pic of me holding it cuz we both worked hard for it. It was 38 pounds even and I did not get the girth but luckily I just bought a longer tape for the boat and measured to just over 43 inches long. Earlier I caught my first flat that was 7 pounds. We were using cut bait for them. I hope to get out on the croix soon!

No but I was giving BrianK a hard time for having his boat in storage. And there are no dumb questions especially when it comes to fishing.

Well I got out on Sunday and enjoyed the weather minus the wind. Not much for a bite but I was out for for playing with my new toys and getting some peace and Quiet. I did manage one Redhorse and I was the only one out there until I was trying to land and there were three boats coming out. The first boat was after white bass and thought I was weird for being happy with one redhorse.

I went out by mayself so you could say I took the boss fishing.

Oh yah and the water temp was between 40 and 41 on the surface with a fair amount of debris floating and fast current north of the Stillwater Bridge.

i was out on the st. croix and there was nothing, i caught a tiny crappie with a huge fathead. strange, i was targeting white bass, i wanted to head north of still water to the apple river area, but it was not a pleasent trip just because the water was too high i think. and the water was too cold. if anybody caught any white bass let me know. just got my first boat and dont know how to look for fish with it? funny but i am very inexperience.

Since you took a new boat on the upper Croix under high water at least you got nerve. That’s a good start. I bet you’ll do well fast this year.

Fish. You are on the right track so far. Get that boat in the water and put some time in on the river. I have never had much luck over there either in these cold water temps. As things warm up keep inmind the back waters will warm first and channels going to them may be good places to start.
