Had anouther decent morning of fishing on the croix north of osceola today. The white bass keep the morning interisting with pulling in about 20 in a row. Only small eyes today. Looks like the trolling bit might be starting to pick up again. The cat fish seem to be staying active during the days up here. I dont catch many threw out the summer chasing eyes but have managed 2 decent channels on the last couple trips. After catching plenty of fish this morning things got interisting.
We pulled up on our last spot, dropped anchor and looked up to see anouther jon flying out of one of the channel across the river. This guy was moving. Thought he had a jet on at first then looked again to see a 18hp strapped to a 1036 alumacraft jon. Cant ever say I have ever saw a rooster tail come off a jon like that before. Wide open up the river into the canoers. 37 mph we found out later. That pretty good for a 10′ boat. Then it happen. This guy decides to go stand in the front of the boat. I didnt get to see the next part but all I heard was a splash and the reving of a motor. ThumperW got to witness the action. So this guy is in the drink with his boat circleing him full speed a few times before it heads across river and launches itself into the brush. The motor still running wide open as we passed to go get komakazze ken.
To end the story. Drug ken over to his boat and left him there to see if he could get it going. Last we saw of him was when he was flying past the osceola landing heading south. Wide open.
You guys down south beware of kamakaze ken and his 10′ boat. He is heading your way and might not be playing with a full deck.

You see it all on the river! Do you ever fish north of the dam? I have been going there a few times this year with not much biting. One short eye, a small pike, and a mess of smaller crappies-all in the slow water area just above the dam to about a mile and a half up. Any suggestions?

I have not been above the dam yet but do plan on trying it some time this summer. The bass fisherman I talk to seem to like that strech of river better than the strech I fish.
T tend to target the small channels that head into the back waters alot. Dropping anchor and dead lining. Plan on doing some trolling this after noon. If there are any small channels or creeks that come into the main river up there they should attract fish.
Keep trying new spots. Remember where you have caught fish and go back to them but keep trying a few new things every trip out. After awhile you should have a number of spots to hit and look for fish. This is what I have been doing for a few years now. It is interisting how a spot can produce one day and the next they are on anouther one that was dead the day before. This is whats makes fishing the river interisting for me. Guys like ken keep it interisting also.

Thanks, Mike! I have fished the lower side of the dam quite a lot-I know most of it by heart. For some reason, the top side seems to be completely different. Maybe the water temp has something to do with it, or maybe just a different characteristic of the fish in generel. I have popped some nice Smallies from shore-I caught a 23 incher a couple years ago up by Rush City on a nice rock point. I run a 17′ Lund Pro Angler DLX (gray w/red & white stripes) with a 90 hp Merc. Maybe I’ll see you and some of the other rats out on the water, and probably already have!

Ive heard from the locals the river above the dam has been very poor this year for some reason….. fishing from the dam to Osceola has been better than above the dam….. maybe it will pick up a bit once things warm up…..

the water has been running cool, 63 to 67 degrees. Probably going to head back out tonight. I don’t know why I keep going back-sucker for punishment I guess. At least traffic isn’t too bad topside.

Any “punishment” suffered will be quickly forgotten in the moment of finding a hot bite or trophy catch! You’ll never know if you don’t go!

Out again last night. The bite is about the same. Walleyes and white bass. I did run into kamakazze ken again. He was at the gas station filling here up. No fishing tackle with this time. What a nut.

I have to give Mike his props – I haven’t witnessed such a stretch before. I saw him go 25 casts for 25 fish. Incredible.

Kamakazee Ken, what an idiot. Not only could he have been seriously injured by the prop of his boat as it circled him closely at full throttle, this happened in the midst of a float of 10 canoers, some with kids. It was just sheer luck that he didn’t hurt someone else. His boat was traveling with such velocity that it finally ended 15 feet up the bank of the river. The difference between an interesting story and a tradgedy on the news was about 20 yards.

When Mike finally got to him floating in the river he was playing it off like it was no big thing. He said “I usually total 1 boat a year”. I sure hope he grows up before he causes someone else not to be able to grow any older.

I told you thumper that you see it all on the croix. Watched a ultralite plan the other night come down the river so close to the water he left a trail behind him.
Also caught my first gar ever tonight. Looked at its mouth and thought about throwing the entire pole over board. What a fish.

has anybody called the DNR about this jamoke?
A little heads up to warden would end that in a hurry. He’s sounds like he’s a bit mentally deficient and dangerous.

My friend talked to the NPS warden at the launch one day about Captain America and his giant cruizer buzzing him at high speed and very close on opener. He said it was “not his job!” but the sheriffs job to talk to jerks like that. I’m not sure if the game warden would have any say about it? Maybe if it’s an 18HP on a 10′ it’s overrated according to the Coast Guard plate on the boat?

Chisago sheriff’s department did get a call about ken. They did patrol the river up here last year. I think ken is putting in around copas or william o brian. They going to talk to someone from down that way to keep a eye out for him.
I think the boat he was running is rated for a 3 horse.

That might be him. Thought there was more yellow on the wings but Ididnt pay that much atention to it. A few years back he would come out at night and fly around.
