The smallmouth bass were cooperative on the whole for the St. Croix bass opener on Saturday the 24th. Typical smallie locations such as shoreline rock held fish but many smallies came from flooded timber or near the waterlogged timber. Jigs and twister tails or jigs and K Grubs (they love K Grubs and ringies) were very effective as well as spinner baits. Some smallmouth were caught from the shallow rock and shoreline, and also hanging in 16 to 18 feet deep off of points and taken on crawlers, these deep smallies were mixed in with eyes and sheepsheads. Larger smallies had thin stomachs and appeared to have completed spawning. River temperature is 60 degrees, and river elevation 681.60.
