Why do I drive 5 hours?

Just came back from Cutfood Souix. Fishing was hit and miss. I spent two hours on the Croix today. I kissed 14 shorties before sending them back and one 21.5 eye that I lip locked before sending back. My wife still had pictures from “girls night out” on the digital, so no pictures.

On Sat the 17th I hooked what I thought to be the biggest fish I ever encounterd…turned out to be about 100 feet of lead core, a shiny new rap and a 14.5 eye attached to that….anyone lose a rap lately?

So I take it fishing wasn’t that great . Well atleast the Croix is picking up. It’s been a tough week for me, i’ve had finals all week so no fishing, just studying(you have no idea how hard it is). This coming from a guy who spends 5-6 days a week on the Croix.
As for the Croix, Turk was right. The fish are real nice 17-18 inchers, but the ratio isn’t all that great. Look for the fish to start to move out of there spring haunts and out to there summer spots wtihin the up coming week. I’ll be out Friday then its off to Mille Lacs for Saturday and Sunday and back to the Croix for what should be a busy Mamorial Day.
    Good Fishin,

Has, studying for finals is important, but let me make a suggestion to you. If you would only use one line while jigging (I know this is going to be hard, but use your will-power), you would have the other hand free to turn the pages in the book! Multi tasking is good to have on your resume!

or along the same lines (pun?)… just use rod holders and now study twice as fast!…..

Was the (leadcore)walleye still alive? If so, darn lucky fish to have encountered you!

Rivereyes, Has is one of those guys that needs either a rod or bait in his hand to be happy. You can find him on campus just by looking for the students that are ducking to avoid getting hit by his 7′ St Croix rod he’s swinging around…but the rod holder for the second rod would work!

Yes Steve W the eye was in (what I thought to be) really good shape. With him attached to the lure and the line, the snag really felt like a HEAVY fish! Now someone can catch him next fall when he’s 16 inches!

I caught a 24″ ‘eye on the catfish bar last year with a nice new ripin stick in his jaws… and about 20 feet of mono attached to that…. Im sure he was much happier when I removed that load and tossed him back…. I should have taken a pic of the event… that was the 2nd fish I caught THAT year with a crank in his jaws by snagging broken line.. both were on mono…. I think thats a testement to superlines… I use 30# spider wire….. it kick$ a$$… and I dont break off with fish, leaving them to try and survive with a lure in their jaws…..

Last year I landed a small mouth with a few inches on mono coming out of his rear end. I pulled on it to see if it would slip out but I wasn’t sure if there was a hook attached someplace. He looked healthy?!

I agree with the driving thing. My 4 biggest walleyes and my biggest sauger have all come from the metro rivers Croix and Miss. That’s most likely due to time on water. Not to mention the misc. fish you get in between eyes! I think i’m in the teens as far as different species on the croix.

I always pull up the line I snag to get rid of it. You never know what your going to get. This year I have a new #5 clown shad rap on 50 yds. of spiderwire and a clam shell on a jig on mono. What I can’t believe is the amount of line attached to some of these lures, like a whole spool! The river usually kicks out half a dozen good lures for me every year either floating or on snagged line. It keeps the stuff out of your prop also!

*wow*… wonder how they busted off that much spider wire? that stuff is tough….. they must have cut it with the prop!…. even then its not that easy to do….. Ive taken to wraping it around a cleat on the boat when Im snagged and pulling it loose that way… Ive not had it break anywhere high yet….. though fireline sometimes has broken right at the surface of the water for me…. mono used to do that a lot more….

I like the cleat idea! Saves on fingers and rod. If you find a blue #5 rap at the catfish, well keep it! I was cut off last year by a wake maker.

Anyone know why they placed the “no wake bouy’s” about 200 yards south of where the where last year? I’m talking about the north set at the catfish bar. I know they use gps’s and I can’t believe they would be that far off unless it’s because of the water being so high….only thing that makes sense to me

    Smallie with Mono…

I’m most disturbed by the fact he seems to have removed his clothes already. I love walleyes as much as the next guy, but sheesh.

My wife said I shouldn’t have posted that picture, citing cruelty to fish.
