Any idea who would put a perminant house out there? Must be someone who KNOWS the river, I saw open water out there not too long ago. Even with this cold weather, I was surprised by the location. It looks like it is just past the green buoys, which would mean that it is over the rivers main flow there.

Been wondering how to get out to that area… enough ice to walk out from the Afton Marina? I’d still be pretty scared to cross the main channel area…
February 9, 2007 at 7:29 pm #534974NO!!! Do not walk from the marina… Never safe ice there. The best bet would be to walk down the shore from Troy Burne or down the shore from St.Croix Beach then out.

The access road to Troy Burne County Park is closed, at least it was a week or so ago… I’d love to get to that area to try the humps just off the shoreline. How do you get to St. Croix Beach?
February 9, 2007 at 9:55 pm #535015I’m sure you could walk out from the Cove landing (Troy Township landing). You can take North Cove road west off of County rd F. It’ll be about a half mile from the landing to get to Catfish point. There is good current going through there (off Catfish) so you’ll want to be careful. From the landing to Catfish doesn’t have much current until you get closer to the nowake zone. I’m not sure if the town of Troy actually closes the landing in the winter. In the summer you have to pay to use the launch. The ticket is pretty steep there if you don’t pay in the summer. You can ask my brother – cost him about 150.00. King, if you had a wheeler or snowmobile, you could get to those humps pretty easy from the Troy Township landing. I’m assuming your talking about the humps in front of the Ycamp.

February 9, 2007 at 10:57 pm #535036No, its not that far. Its probably about 3 miles south of the dog track. Its just before Troy Burn. Take a right on North Cove rd. If you follow North Cove rd west towards the river and stay on North Cove it’ll take you down the hill. The landing will be the first road on the right once your at the bottom of the hill. Or if you take a left off of North Cove at the top of the hill and then veer to the right, it will run you right into the landing. If you look at Yahoo maps, you’ll see it pretty easy. Let me know if you have any other questions about getting their. I used to live a mile from there. Its an awesome landing but not alot of parking.
February 12, 2007 at 7:32 pm #535828That shack has been out there a few years. Its just alot closer than in years past. The last couple weeks have givin us more ice than I have seen down there in quite a few years. Not long ago that ice was still pretty sketchy in some areas and it does not take long for it to change. The area we fish typaclly has 6″ of ice and there is about a foot right now. One year we watched it go from 10″ to 4-5 inches in less than a week and it didnt take mutch but the cold snap to leave. Access is the issue for the most part. I would not advise anyone to venture too close to catfish without anyone that knows the area well. And Has is 1000% right about Windmill. Bad Ice!! The wide basin areas should have some good ice right now but take your time and make sure to have someone with. Good luck and be safe.
February 21, 2007 at 9:56 pm #539811I seen that too. Must have seen the forcast. Looks like a few guys were fishing there last night. I still had quite a bit of ice under me as well but once it opens up it should knock out some ice quick!
