I was fishing 2 days ago and i had a flag about 150 yards away but i could see it if it went up. I noticed that i couldn’t even see a bit of orange and so i went to check, and it wasn’t in the hole i drilled just an open hole. Sooooooo was it a pike that pulled it in?

    Probably a game warden.
I would have guessed it would have been abandoned being that far away.

Not sure about the disappearance of his tip-up, but I’m willing to bet he’s overstating the distance he was from it. Not calling the poster a liar, just that most people are very poor judges of distances in that range! Kinda like the guys that tell you they shot their deer at 400 yards….most times that is the human eyes exaggeration and not even close to reality.

Nonetheless, Protourbaits, did you see anyone in the vicinity of the tipup while you were out there? You posted this on the St. Croix forum so I am assuming that is where you were fishing? I’ve had tipups tangle into a nasty mess while fishing the upper Croix, is it possible your line got twisted or caught up with something floating down-stream and somehow got pulled down the hole.

sometimes that happens when using a 10″ auger,I always have an old dare-devil packed,& have been able to jig onto the line,I won’t use 10″ auger for tip-ups anymore.

You have to be careful about tip-up placement in Minnesota. Regulation states “Anglers must remain within 200 feet of their tip-up.” Page 58, 2006 Minnesota Fishing Regulations. A lot of people are not aware of that requirement in the fishing regulations.

    Sea monster pulled it in!

I’ve heard of big pike stripping line off of tip-ups and even “pulling” the tip up very, very hard down to the hole, but never pull one in….

Again, I’m talking fish 20+ pound stripping line………

I would have guessed somebody took it…….

I stand corrected. The 200 foot tip-up rule applies to Minnesota inland waters. If you are fishing Wisconsin – Minnesota border waters tip-ups must be within 400 feet of the angler. Page 52, 2006 Minnesota Fishing Regulations.

    Thanks, Josh.

i did find it, and yes there was a little involved. And yes it was about 100 yards away. I went out a couple days later and put the aqua vu down to check for crappies, and i saw the tip-up laying down at the bottom of the lake. I was able to pull it up w/ a treble hook. I am aware of the 100 foot law but i was a little on the sketchy side
