I doubt WI-DNR got it straight for this year… they never seem to be able to communicate with MN-DNR. I believe the regs for MN is the saturday closest to May 1 while WI’s regs are the first Saturday in May or something like that. I’ll check the DNR website to see if there’s any hint of a change…
Hey BK… yeah, maybe I’m being ‘too harsh’ on WI-DNR … what I heard was that MN and WI DNRs got together and agreed that they should have the same regs for the Croix – don’t know what happened but I don’t think either side made any changes yet ? So it is again this year – MN residents open on April 28th and WI residents don’t open until the next week…
I thought I read somewhere that the WI DNR had a hearing sometime last year and that they would be changing the Croix opener to coincide with MN’s date… I’ll have to do some research to see if I can find that. Also, I recall that last spring the CO’s only did ‘public education’ stops if you were out early with a WI license (not ticketing – just reminding that WI opened a week later…). This sort of mix-up between border states has to be terribly frustrating to those guys too…
like every year I will fish on the St Croix opener. some things never change. I’ve never been stopped on that weekend and I will plead ignorance if I ever am…

Last year on the opener, I was stopped by Park Rangers. They checked my license(WI) and never said a word. They also never asked to look at the stringer I had out. They were very polite and just said to have a nice time .
