I’m getting antsy, I was hoping this colder weather was making some ice on the St Croix. I started at Sillwater and it was looking promising. The river was froze over from Stillwater down to the High Lines at the Excel Energy King Plant. Then the river was wide open from the High Lines south to Hudson – I think this stiff breeze from the west is keeping it from freezing over.
Andersen Bay was partly froze. Andersen Windows has a bubbler going under their floating dock so it makes for some iffy ice conditions along the west shore of the bay. Anybody wanting to walk out from the Andersen Boat Launch needs to be careful – that ice in there could be pretty tricky all winter long with the bubbler going.
The last few years it has been around the third week of December before we have decent ice – looks like this year could follow that trend. I heard weather temps for 30’s with possibly a 40 next week. That will slow up the ice making.
The Allen S. King Excel Energy Plant looks like it is shut down. Nothing coming out of the smokestack. This could be an interesting year if the King Plant is shut down. The river will probably freeze shore to shore and I wouldn’t expect the shad to be hanging around with no open warm water at the King Plant like we normally have. I wonder how that will affect the fishing in that area this year?
