A dandy St. Croix River Sturgeon

I was out camping on the St. Croix River north of Taylors falls at my Sturgeon hole fishing spot. I was fishing with a fathead minnow off the bank, staying warm by a nice fire on a crystal clear night. It was getting late, sometime after 11:00 PM. I had my rod in a rod holder and the jingle bells on the end of mine line started to ring indicating a bite. I picked up the rod, set the hook and fish on! I was floored at the sound of this huge fish coming clear out of the water and making a splash like you wouldn’t believe. Sturgeon love to jump after they are hooked and can you imagine something 5+ feet long come flying out of the water and its at the end of your line? I yelled to my friend Mark to grab the lantern and spotlight. The battle was on. For about 3 solid minutes the fish took out drag and then the fish snagged Mark’s fishing line. We cut Marks line and I continued to battle the fish. I realized that I wasn’t ever going to get this fish up on the steep bank we were fishing on so I told Mark to grab my waders and being the great friend that he was helped me get into them so I could fight this thing from the waters edge. It was pretty comical trying to stand on one leg fighting this fish while your buddy puts your wading boots on. A few times the fish took me dangerously close to a log jam but I was able to turn her before I got into trouble. Finally I got a good look at her and couldn’t believe the size of this Sturgeon! She had one more good run in her before I was able to grab her and bring her ashore. The battle I estimated lasted 15-20 minutes.

I was so excited I was shaking. It is not everyday you catch a 5 foot + freshwater fish! I grabbed the scale and stood there in amazement! As I slowly pulled the fish off the ground and it read 20lb..30lb….40lbs…. and finally stopped. on a new personal record of mine, the fish weighed in at 42.75 LBS!!!

Took me a few minutes to revive her and then she swam off into the darkness. Whohoo!!!!!!!!!! It is fish like this that keeps me fishing, making memories, and feeling awful fortunate to have an opportunity to catch and release an a amazing fish. And my friends, there are bigger ones to be had in the St. Croix. The Sturgeon are really making a comeback in many rivers in Minnesota. People talk about Muskie fever? This angler has Sturgeon fever! I’ll need to get a bigger rod, and a bigger scale if I start catching them much bigger! What a thrill they are to catch!

    I have that fever too!

I just got in but I did not do well today they turned off just before I got there. Between 2 guys they caught 28 before I got there but not much for size.

Can’t you only fish sturgeon downstream from the Taylors Falls dam?

    Great fish, though!

I had to check the regs to confirm and you are correct that there is no open season for Sturgeon on the Upper St. Croix River North of Taylors Falls and I’d never keep one anyway, especially a fish that size that could have been older than I am. However, when one puts a glob of crawlers or in this case a fathead minnow on the bottom of the river with a weight I’m not sure how anyone could say one was purposely fishing for them. What fish that swims in the river doesn’t like a nightcrawler or minnow? I’m a happy to catch anything that swims type of fisherman and love to make a big fire, set the rod out with a bell on it and see what swims by. I can’t tell the Sturgeon not to bite after all and we catch many Smallmouths, Walleye, Suckers, Dogfish and Catfish from this site. It’s not like in the Spring watching people in April toss spinnerbaits at spawning bass in lakes when there is no other open species that would hit that type of bait in a lake. I’ve seen many Sturgeon caught in the river outside the Sept 2nd to Oct 15th window so I know I’m not alone in catching these things when they decide to bite. Just like catching Walleyes on Red Lake fishing for Crappie before the season was open. How could you not catch Walleyes fishing for Crappies the last few years up there?

But this brings up a good point and I glad you mentioned it. If I do intentionally target Sturgeon I’ll make sure I’m below the dam at Taylors falls. I noticed the Rainy River has a Catch and Release season Oct 1st – April 23rd and 2 separate harvest seasons. I think the entire St. Croix should be open to this catch and release type of fishing. Heck, a fair number of Sturgeon are caught ice fishing by Bayport every year. From the posts I’ve read there sure seems to be a healthy population growing in the St. Croix so lets give the fisherman more chances to catch this amazing fish and put em back!

    Welcome to the site mate!

Heck of a fish. Though next time you better cut your line if you get something that big on. LOL.

Just kidding. It could been a nice cat or any other species out there. You did good by getting it in and practicing some great CPR.

I just don’t think there’s been enough interest by sportfishermen in the past decade

    Shhhhh! No one knows!!!

Very good fishing story Gibbonski! Felt like I was right there with you!

For some reason, I think you go to bed thinking about how you landed that fish!!

Welcome to IDA and what a first post!!! I’m going to bet there will be many more!

Hope you can make it down this way on Saturday for the sturgeon contest…you never know who’s rod is going to go tappity tap with a big one and win the pot.

I’m willing to bet .25 cents that when Whisker Hook woke up in the morning she would be dreaming about her fishing rod bending under the boat for the next month or so.

She’s the Master Angler that took the money away from the guys on the last contest with a 64 in sturgeon….um…that’s about 60 lbs.

Sure wish we had a video of that boat fighting that fish!

Again, Welcome to IDA! We’ll be looking for your posts!

PS ever catch any flathead cats up that way….

I just wanted to add taht I am not criticizing you, I just wnated to make sure that everyone knows the regs to avoid any hassles with the law.

Looks like a lot of fun. I hope to tango with one similar to that this afternoon

    Good point Ralph!

Nothing worse than haveing a CO walk up and ask what are you fishing for…and reply with “sturgeon, channels and dogfish” in a closed area.

They sure are a bonus fish though!!

You got that right BrianK! You could have bet more than .25cents!

Nice fish Gibbonski!! It brought me right back to when I caught mine, although I still haven’t completely stopped thinking about it yet!
