Shamu and I went out for some sturgeon but I do not have quite heavy enough eqipment for the big ones. The ones up to about 35 inches are ok on 8 lb test. But I hooked into a fish that I fought for just over 1 hour 30 min. It was a blast but the line had enough the worst part is that my top part of my new rod is at the bottom of the croix.

I figured that the smaller fish were hitting on worms so that is what I put on my smaller rod and cut bait on my other and the worms kept me busy. It was a great day out and a thanks to Shamu for taking me out.

Well……. I have one rod that is heavier duty but it is nice to have a second rod so I thought I could get by as long as I kept one crawler and I had a 1/0 hook. In my defense I did catch a 34 incher and some smaller ones before I broke it. But yes I am beefing up tonight I’ll be using Cast and Blasts poles. Gook luck to all.

How deep are you guy’s fishing for the sturgeon?
I was thinking of taking my boy out tonight and seeing if we could catch one…or more.
I was thinking of using a 3 way rig 4′ leader with a couple ounces and a big salmon hook with some cut sucker. Should I use a slip sinker setup instead? So far I have only picked 2 up (24-30″) both on crawlers while Lindy rigging for eyes.
I think my boy would really like trying to pull one off the bottom.

    Thanks,

    Ferny.

Ferny, use a cat rig, two or three once sinker with a swivel and about a one foot leader. Crawlers will get you a bunch of small ones, but cut sucker or shad will give you the bigger. Right now most are fishing in about thirty feet of water. Any more questions, ask Brian K. The go to guy, good luck tonight, and I hope your boy tags into a big one………

I’d say 30+’ is preferred. yesterday i believe we fished in 33′. We caught most of our bigger fish on Shad but crawlers caught of fish too, including one that was high 50s”..
Moore’s right go with a slip rig set up. I used either 4/0 Gami Circles or 4/0 Gami Oct hooks.
Watch out for that little tap tap, a rod with softer tip action will help detect lights bites.

    Good luck

Thanks for the info guy’s. I wish I would have tied up a slip rig. I didn’t have any heavy mono and heavy swivels so I didn’t. I just ran my heavy Power Pro all the way to the hook and clipped on a heavy snap weight. (Note to self…don’t try that again!) I had 2 missed bites…that I know of! I was in the right spot 34′ and saw constant action with 8-10 caught before our very eyes in 2 hours! I’ll be better prepared next time! With the shad jumping all over the place I need a dip net.
    I’ll be back.

    Thanks,

    Ferny.

    U technically don’t need a mono leader.
But here’s some other pointers I’ve pick up.
Have some slack in ur line so that ur bait isn’t draggin around in the muck. Also when u see those light bites “tap tap”, pick up ur rod, reel n the slack, wait till U feel the fish then set the hook.
Watch ur electronics too. I’ve got plenty of fish right below the boat.
Now that I think about it a 3way with about 8″ on the dropper would probably work too.
But if u can’t get any shad, cut sucker, redhorse, or a few crawlers will give u constant action.
