A beautiful bad day

Finally got back on the river yesterday after several weeks of other commitments… Went out a bit later than I had hoped (around 8:30 am) and headed to the spots just south of the I-94 bridge. There were a handful of boats out there over the ‘community holes’ and I get started at one of the drop-offs. Tried jig/minnow (fatheads/shiners) but couldn’t buy a bite. Talked to several others out there and all had the same story – very little activity; of those reporting any bites, they were hooking up silvers.

I pulled jigs along the break heading south and had a few bites (had the skin pulled off the side of one of my shiners) but couldn’t get a hook-set. Headed further south to the ‘private beach’ area on the WI side – looking for any action at all! I would have been happy with even a sheepie! Nothing…

Headed up the channel in Hudson to try the swing bridge – nothing… talked to a few other people in that area as well – same report: nothing biting!

The tuna boats were out in force and between their wakes and the wind, I was tired of fighting the waves so I headed in, empty handed.

Talked to a few guys taking out a very nice Ranger at the Hudson landing. They told me they were out since early morning and tried trolling lead-core with cranks, jigging plastics, pitching jigs, etc. both north and south of Hudson and they came up empty handed as well.

So… while it was an absolutely beautiful day weather-wise on the river, the fishing sucked and the big-boats and winds sucked… overall, a beautiful, bad day.

King185, I was out on saturday enjoying the nice weather too. I did get a few crappies, one walleye, and one smallie. It was pretty slow for me and others too. I did see one boat having a little luck pulling cranks. They said they had some in the box. The only one I caught was in 20-22 feet of water near hudson 3 waying cranks which was released. I notice there are still tons of shad swimming near the surface everywhere. I think until they start dieing off the bite is going to be slow. Bring back the cold weather.

sounds familiar. I pulled cranks for 3 hours on Sunday morning. nothing to show for it but grass. really hard to keep the lures clean. water temps were form 60 to 62 degrees. I don’t think the frenzy has started quite yet…

I tried pulling cranks too but had the same experience – spent more time pulling them back up and pulling off the weeds than actually fishing with them. That’s why I went to jigging…

As for the shad, I was surprised by how large the bait clouds were and how many I saw… Even with that, though, I didn’t mark many ‘big fish’ on the sonar. I brought my AquaVu with me yesterday but didn’t drop it down once – never marked a large enough group of fish to warrant taking a look to see what they were.

I think the boat will stay in driveway for another week or so until the fall bite really picks up. I may head over to Wissota this weekend as my bro-in-law has reported excellent walleye fishing over there…

Went out Monday for a few hours and all I could catch were a half dozen pesky 11 and 12″ crappies.

I hit the river last weekend, also had the same results. Tried lead, jig minnow, 3 way with sticks, only 2 small saugs. There were lots of jiggers in prescott, I personally didn’t see anyone pull one up. Water temp was 62.3, with this rain and the cold front coming in, hopefully it will turn these fish on.

    Nice Loogy!

I was going to ask you where you caught them…but…never mind!

Couple river rats I know said it was slow too…but then Brian’s post out of Jimmy’s makes it look like everyones in the wrong places.

He’s too big of a guy, otherwise I would stop into Jimmy’s and twist his arm until he spilled the beans.

BK – so you think the bridge in the background is a give-away?? I’m sure he just photoshop’ed that in there to lead people astray!
