Thank you all!!! I’m more than happy to share to photos and especially the story!
Beave-aren’t you just hilarious!! That’s alright though! I deserve it!!
Congrats to ya girl! Great picture and even better play by play story. I enjoyed it very much. Good job!
Thanks Dan! Glad you enjoyed it!
Dtro-thank you too! You’re exactly right about my username. I thought the same thing!! They don’t have really big whiskers, but they’re there!
Wow, awesome fish and an exellent story to go with it I could actually see the whole story unfolding while reading it
Congrats on a GREAT fish
I could have told the story in 3 words…
* Chinese Fire Drill *
It was very entertaining chasing Brandy around the boat while Karl stood in front with the anchor rope in hand (keep in mind this is 30-40 mph winds). It took everything in Karls power to hold that rope over-head like the statue of liberty every time the fish decided to make another lap. I think we would have lost Karl with any more laps.
There is nobody that could have done a better job of landing such a large fish. I remember seeing the rod tip bump once and hearing a splash.. I looked towards the splash and a REALLY BIG head came out of the water. I knew immediately to get everything out of the way possible, and the boat as organized as possible. I told Carl to start reeling up lines, as did I. I quickly pulled up the rear anchor and told Karl he is in charge of the front anchor and be ready to do whatever had to be done. After that she faught the fish… then she faught the fish, then the fish faught some more. I followed closely behind trying to be sure Brandy didnt go overboard.. there was a very close call at the rear of the boat and she and the fishing rod were hanging half over the boat. I quickly grabbed her and the rod and pulled her back to a standing position.. just to continue the laps. After many laps around the boat the fish was obviously tiring.. but it was so heavy it was like bringing a tree off the bottom. It seemed like an eternity before we finally got to see the fish pop up boatside.. and quickly learned it was far larger than I expected/presumed. Several netting attempts finally got the fish in the net… not sure how it fit(most of it anyhow), but it got it into the boat.
What an experience.. talk about a fish of a lifetime. It couldnt have happend to a better person, and I am glad I could be part of it!
The actual dimensions of the fish was 63″ long and a hair under 24″ in girth.
I didnt wan to keep the fish out any longer to try to get a weight. Its very safe to say that was a 60 pound fish.
That was a nice fish and a great story thanks for sharing.. I have yet to try for one of those prehistoric beasts….
WOW Brandy!! Awesome fish! Good job showing the boys how to do it!
I can’t wait to show Tyler those pics in the morning. He misses you and Karl!

I’m thinking that Whisker Hooked is whisker hooked and might be out there again…there could be one more fish of a life time out there for her yet this year.
Thank you again!
Dave-Thank you for your kind words!! Like I said, I couldn’t have done it without you!!
Sherry-Thank you! We miss you guys too!
BrianK-You couldn’t be more right!! I am completely “whisker hooked”!! I thought I was when I came up with the name, but that was nothing! You can bet that I’ll be out there again too! Maybe we’ll see you out there sometime so I can actually meet ya! Oh,and I would love to catch another fish of a lifetime, but I’m definitely happy for the rest of the year already!
Thanks guys for leaving a few for my buddy Joel & I to catch.
49″
48″
The total tally was 30 sturgeonfish with 43″, 43″, 47″, 48″, & 49″ being the biggest.
The new boat worked great as well!
These were caught the night after the contest, couldn’t make the contest as I was picking up the new ride. Maybe next time!
30 fish! Where you letting them go and Joel catching them???
I was out last night for 5 hours…with three sheepies to show for it
Nothing surfacing on the water, no shad jumping…The weather must have finally caught up to them…oh well…
Back out Thursday and Friday again!
I know there’s a bunch of good fish holding pics out there…but…Hanson, can I use your pic for “how to hold a sturgeon” demo’s in the future?
Nice fish too!
That was fun. I hope to be getting out there this weekend also. And thanks for posting the pics Larry. Great job on that there monster Brandy.
Brian-
What we noticed with the shad is that you weren’t catching anything unless they were jumping around your boat. Sometimes there would be no shad jumping, then we’d catch a fish, and after that, they would be going crazy on the surface.
Those 2 pictures turned out pretty good. Are you saying that they are better than a vertical hold with a gill grab. Only problem with the picture of me is the water line is crooked, or maybe I’m crooked. Oh well, something is crooked.
Thanks Shamu! Wanted to say it was nice to meet you at Moore’s Bait&Tackle the other day!
Hanson,
There are MANY new people trying Sturgeon fishing for the first time. They catch a few small ones, measure, tape and photo them and in the drink they go.
For a large fish, what 50″ and up, just the above combined with the fight tuckers tbem big boys out. 15 to 20 minutes if normal for reviving them….and with a couple fingers in the gills…well, it’s a death sentence.
Do I have data to support this? Nope, just experiance.
Do I get pee’d off when I see someone holding them in the gills for folding there gill plates over…Nope, just make it a point to help them out by explaining to them…as I haven’t met anyone that miss handled a fish on purpose.
Hey I’m back. Been tied up the last couple of days. A little suspense never hurt anyone.
Eat your hearts out at this fish of a life time achievement.
Congrats from all of us Brandy!!
I am heading out on Thurs for my first time after sturgeon. I am stoked. I caught one earlier this year. I am hooked! I’ll post my fun friday or sat.
It might be dark…but if the weather holds I’ll be seeing you out there around 7ish.
I was looking at Whisker Hook’s picture…remember the White sturgeon with 11 guys holding it that was floating around in emails this last spring?? Her’s is better!
I saw that email! If you’re being serious, thanks for the compliment!! Was the one in the email a little too big for you??
