I am hoping to try the St. Croix for walley this week. Live in St. Paul and I am wondering if anyone could suggest some good places to launch my boat that would provide some fishing holes that would be good to hit for this first timer on the river. Any help would be helpful.

The most popular spots to fish walleye on the St. Croix (and for good reason) will be the Hudson Channel, in front of the Afton marina, and the Kinni narrows. There are also many points and other structure between these spots. These 3 spots are narrower (no wake zones) that normally have a little better current flow. I don’t fish walleyes much in the fall, but would try both live bait and trolling cranks. There are many boat launches: The Bluffs (alot of people from MN use this landing – don’t have directions), Hudson has 2 public launches (weekends can be busy and maybe full). There is one Hudson landing right north of 94 and another one just north of there (turn left at the Dairy Queen). Both should be less than 10.00 for non residents. There is also Beanies on the MN side just south of 94. They will also be about 10.00. Good luck.

September 7, 2006 at 1:24 am #475912As the area north of Stillwater and the Bayport pool were my first loves on the river, these areas must be mentioned, I have pounded fish there all year long in the past! My newest sweet heart is south of the Kinni, lots of anglers from the Bluffs launch head north; the area from the launch south to Prescott gets overlooked…Personally speaking about Bluffs launch, if my destinination was Bluffs park I’d keep driving and go to Prescott, or Hastings, and I’d fish the Sippi as I do! Pool three is so peaceful, with great walleye and sauger fishing.
The Mississippi has the fall walleye bite where the eyes are HOGS! Down there it’s a real rivermans river where the current concentrates fish. But I do love the Croix! Ah the choices, it’s too fun!
Good luck – Keep Catchin’
TurkSeptember 8, 2006 at 10:00 pm #476715I am right with you there Turk! The sippi is a true trophy fishery. Still love the Croix though. I just started hitting the croix again the last few weeks and we have had to work for the eyes pretty hard. Pulling cranks has produced when you can get into an area that doesnt have a mess of eel grass and other weeds laying on top. Also crawler harnesses have worked as well but bring some extra because the panfish are hungry. 20-25 fow has been a good depth and keep an eye out for the baitfish to find the active eyes! I spent a day down there with the camera last week and was amazed how many eyes we seen but could not catch
I will be back down quite a bit in the next few weeks so if anyone sees me stop by and say hi! I have a grey 16″ lund with a 25 merc on the back and a IDA decal on the boat. Good luck this weekend guys looks like some great St Croix weather!!September 19, 2006 at 1:15 am #480200RatherB,
Hey did you see fish in most places with the camera or just a few of the places you dropped the camera?
Talking about the rivers Croix and Sippi, I’ve fished the Mississippi so much lately that I’m chomping at the bit to get out for my next guide trip on the Croix! It’s time to hammer the eyes !!!! I’m going livebait (I’ll be getting some fatheads for the first time in months) and cranks are sharpened and ready to go, can’t wait. This is the time of year to jig w/minnow and troll spinners w/minnows.
Keep Catchin’
TurkSeptember 19, 2006 at 6:03 pm #480387Hey Turk, Most areas we checked were spots that have produced in the past and most held fish. I was blown away by how many carp we seen. they were everywhere we checked!!! They seemed intrested in the camera and kept following it around blocking the view and when we found eyes there were lots of them! Its amazing how different it is down there than we could ever imadgine. Remember the car I told you about a few years back. We never found it on the camera but found the tires Must have been an 18 wheeler
