He didnt get the length His measuring device in the boat only goes to 48″ and it was “way over that”.

I didnt get a chance to see the fish but we could hear the water when the fish thrashed, and I think people could hear it for miles when the fish spazzed out in his boat!

We did pretty well last night also, we didnt get quite as many fish, but the average size was up a bit and we had a couple around 40″, and audemp caught what had to be a state record eel.

Shad and suckers were hot. Crawlers had limited success although thats all they wanted a couple nights before.

Yeah I looked up the measurment of the record eel and it was 6-9 lb 36 length 14 girth. I know for sure that one was way over 36 inches and felt much heavier than 7 lbs. Darn it! Where was DTRO when you need him to unhook those buggers for ya! I would have put him in the boat but before I even opened my mouth Dave said “Dont you dare put that thing in my boat!” and we call ourselves big outdoorsman!

Any pics of the unofficial state record eel??

PS Marc…you can have that title.

All this talk about eels and I’m starting to second guess this sturgeon fishing stuff

I’m already deathly afraid of snakes, Brian heard that story. If you were within 30 miles of downtown St.Paul on a particular summer day this year I’m sure you heard me screaming

I do have limits.. an out of control live eel in the boat is one of them

I have been there and done that.. they are not friendly. Something tells me I am the only person in the boat that would have went after it to get it under control.. although Marc had his *game face* on I dont think Marc would have had a chance to go after the eel because Mr Moore would have been standing on his shoulders if he didnt go swimming for safe harbor.

For the record… Bob didnt make any comments(or scream) when the eel was present.. but he sure lit up a smoke in a hurry after it was gone.. and he doesnt smoke very often.

I think I may start bringing the bait cooler along to keep these guys alive.. we can transport them to Brian K’s bait tank to keep alive to weight and measure at a later time

My camera phone was in my pocket and I was the only one holding the EEL and Bobs battery on his digital camera went out so there were no pictures of the fish we caught That was an amazingly strong eel. I tried to get a weight on him but the eel did a little whip movement and shook both the circle hook (Which was lodged in its bottom jaw amongst the rows of razor sharp teeth) and the scale hook. To bad I could not get Steve (Comanchero15) to come over and use his modified gamagatsu hook scale! That would have worked I think. I also found out that eel was probably around at least 20 years old by the length of it. American eel

Hey Brian you might come home one day to check on your bullies and find a nice sized eel in their place looking back at you if things continue this way.

What would your FW say if she saw that?

I could see the line-up of cop cars now flying down the highway with the lights flashing heading towards Brians domain… just to find him in the back yard shooting off multiple shots with a 12 guage trying to shoot an eel in the bullhead tank.

I have to give Brian more credit than that, he wouldnt use a firearm at 1st.. he would figure out some type of *McGyver* (sp?) and put an extension cord in the bait tank and plug it in(forgeting to close the lid in a panic)… the eel would come shooting out of the tank and then the gunfire would commence after the eel was slithering around in his back yard. Upon the time the officers arrive, they would have Brian at gunpoint briefly until they seen what he was shooting at.. then they would probably join on the firing line in fear of their own safety.

I finally found the Eel thread. I must have searched the wrong thread before. Do those things have teeth on them?

Marc, thanks for the link. That’s one interesting little critter. How’d you like to find one crawling over your hull one night?

Well.. I guess I should have bought a lottery ticket.

Last night we got another eel to the boat. I can count the times in my life on half of my hand that I have caught eels in the past and I have been fishing the area rivers hard the last 25+ years.

What are the odds on getting an eel on 3 simutanious trip out?

The fishing for us screeched to a halt for us last night. We only got 2? sturgeon, a fat channel, a carp, and an eel. It sound lite Catten Addict did ok in his boat with a couple very respectable fish and many more smaller fish.

I thought I heard something coming from somewhere.

I think the bite was off because of the storm system that developed over our head as we left. No lightning when I left for the access, I stopped at the store and got gas and it was like a strobe light by the time I could pump $10 into the tank… amazing how fast weather can change.

I got the day off work, so count me in!

Dave, do you have a list of who else is in? And can we pay the entry fee at Jimmy’s or only at Moore’s?

Entry is only at Moores bait, Jimmy’s is in no way affiliated with this contest.. but still a good place to get bait close to the st croix.

There are only a couple people on the list, and seveal people *thinking about it*.. I hope people start coming in soon. The worst case scenerio if there is a very poor turnout, I am not opposed to a *big fish pot*, or just a couple paying places.

Contest or not, I’ll be out there fishing having a great time. My boat is up to 40 sturgeon since the season opened last saturday.. and last night didnt put any in the boat with this crazy cold front.

Cold front didn’t bother the catfish however. I know a couple guys (Larry) who were pretty darn excited after last night. Flatheads were cooperative, and pretty good channel cat action. Wonder what the fish would have done if it wasn’t near blizzard conditions without the snow.

The channel cats were biting just fine last night.. just the sturgeon were not cooperating for us.

Well.. im off to plug the hole of the missing rivit and back to fishing I go (looks like a drinking fountain in the front of my boat ).. the glow stick worked well to plug it for the evening last night

I think the largest channels have been 12 and 14 lbs since the sturgeon season opened…with the largest sturgeon coming in at 55 inches…many in the 40’s and many more smaller.

I hope to have a report up Monday morning…although I can never count on fish!

Whisker & I got out with FisherDave last night for our first ever Sturgeon outing. What a blast that was! Weather was decent, boat traffic was non existant, fish were biting here and there and the comedy was at its usual peak. Anyways I was witness to 5 fish. 3 of which were well into the mid 30s and 2 well into the 40s. Guess who got the 40s….. yep, the ever lucky WhiskerHooked. I dunno maybe the one that gave Dave a beating from was in the 40s… anyways, way cool stuff. My do these things fight hard. Cant wait to get out again. Thanks for the trip Dave.

That’s what everyone was hoping you would say…CA!

With Steve out of town and you know in it….Fisherdave and crew are going to be the ones to watch out for…although Joe Bush will give them a run if he’s going to fish it!
