Been out of the area for the last few weekends… am looking to get out this week/weekend. I’ve heard the rain has helped the walleye/sauger bite pick up a bit and that the shad have really schooled up. Anyone have any reports to offer?

how’s the action?

I was out last Friday and had pretty steady action for most of the day. Pulling spinners and crawlers in about 22′ of water seemed to be the best producer. Tried trolling cranks for a while and found a few sauger, but the spinners seemed to be what they wanted. Caught about 6 walleye and about the same amount of sauger. Ended up getting a 28″ eye that went about 9lbs which quickly went back in the water after a photo. The sheepies and small channel cats kept you busy in between the walleyes. We did see huge schools of minnows all over. There definately in a lot of forage right now, but the fish are definately still taking your offerings.
August 8, 2006 at 12:26 pm #467335thanks for the update… I think I’ll go out for a while tonight and see if I can put some ‘white meat’ in the freezer!
August 8, 2006 at 4:12 pm #467410Was out on sunday. Power trolling seems to be the way to go. Trolled in 12 – 14′ of water going about 5mph on the GPS and pulled 20 eyes between 14 and 20″ in about 2 hours. Had to get off the water at 12 due to the 6 foot waves from the tuna boats!
August 8, 2006 at 5:48 pm #467437I was out Sunday, 6 August and got skunked. Water elevation was 675.6′ and 80 degrees, light NNW breeze. I was drifting cut bait for channel cats in the Bayport area with no luck. Lots of big boat traffic all the way up to 11:00pm. I need to get some seasick medicine. Marked tons of bait pods. I gave it up at 11:30pm.
Was out again on Monday, 7 August and fished upstream of Stillwater. Water elevation at 675.4′ and water temp 79 degrees, weather was clear and wind was calm. Water was smooth as glass and an almost full moon made the evening beautiful. Tons of bait fish everywhere and fish chasing them after dark, lots of splashing and slurping going on in the dark. Picked up one nice channel at 08:40 pm and missed a nice fish at 09:35pm – both on cut sucker. At 10:00 I got a big turtle that was a nasty critter – I just cut the line and let him have the hook and bait. Still some of that green algae crud floating downstream but not as bad as a week ago. You still have to clean your line every 10 minutes or so.
August 9, 2006 at 4:52 pm #467761Didn’t get out last night – the honey-do/no-you-don’t list was waved in front of me . I’m bound and determined to get out tonight, though, as the better-half has my weekend planned for me (out of town at a family function) .
August 10, 2006 at 3:15 pm #468125got out for an hour or so last night… with the limited time available, we went to Catfish and worked the drop-offs just off the point of the bar. Only thing we managed to boat were a handful of sheepies . Didn’t mark any fish on the top of the humps (~15 fow) but marked many fish on the downslopes, both up and downstream.
Saw a number of guys out in the flats beyond the Afton Marina pitching big musky lures… if any of you guys read this, let me know if you managed any hook-ups…
August 10, 2006 at 4:30 pm #468160I was out last night pitching those large plugs and did end up boating a 41″er…THANK YOU Comanchero15!!! I was in the white Triton. We also threw for some smallies and had some action. I had alot of fun out there for my first time, except when those 100ft tall waves come and almost throw me off the boat.
August 10, 2006 at 5:45 pm #468177I tried to watch the ‘ski activity while pulling up the sheepies… If I had been alone on my boat (had three teenage guys with me), I would have trolled over there and thrown a few lures myself. When I suggested that, I was overruled as I had only one musky pole in the boat. Next time out, I’m going to pitch a few!
I hear you about the large waves! On the way down to Catfish from Hudson, I was going full-throttle (~40 mph) and hit some rather large roller waves and had my 18-footer completely out of the water! Its hard to see those rollers when its overcast and getting dark. I think we jumped over at least two/three more waves before landing! Gave the guys a bit of a scare.
