I just got back in from an evening of fishing on the St Croix. I launched out of Bayport at 8:00 pm. Boat traffic on the Stillwater to Hudson stretch of river is really high because of Lumberjack Days in Stillwater. I pulled out at 11:00 pm and counted 15 boats running that stretch in the dark – big boats / little boats and everything in between. Everybody had running lights and seemed to be operating safely but you need to keep your wits about you when operating in the dark with that much boat traffic. The wakes from the big boats can really get you rolling in the dark. I was glad to get off the water. I’ll wait until next Monday night to fish the St Croix. By the way – skunked tonight. Didn’t even mark bait. Water temp was 78 degrees, light breeze out of the North, water elevation 675.3′ (normal pool elevation 675′). Too many boats creating too much wake action – the shoreline was rolling with waves and the water was dirty. I may hit Pool 3 on the Mississippi one night this weekend for a change of pace.
