I picked up my biggest Croix smallie to date last week a 20″er. After catching tons of small ones over the years I didn’t think I’d ever get a big one. The bass were on fire last Thursday night on topwater. There was some kind of Mayfly hatch but they were almost yellow colored flys? I also picked up a 16″ eye on the Skitterpop after dark. It hit exactly the same as the smallies!

Nice fish! I haven’t tried the Croix for smallies yet… I have a spot on a nearby body of water that is a consistent producer of nice sized (average size is in the 14-16″ with quite a few pushing 20 and up) smallies, the occasional pike (most recent I pulled out of there was a 32 incher), and decent perch. The best aspect is that I don’t need to rig up and launch my boat as I can reach this spot on foot and just wade into knee-deep water. My son has a blast catching smallies on a fly-pole, using a regular hook with either crawlers or a leech. It’s a cool technique wherein the fly-line acts like a bobber and the leader-length sets the depth. The hook and bait fall slowly which departs a great action to the live bait. There’s nothing like fighting a 20″-class smallie or a 30″-class pike on a fly pole! If we’re targeting pike, we use fireline as a leader to reduce the number of bite-offs of the line.
