I am guessing the Croix might be a little quieter this weekend with Minnesota and Sconi inland waters open. The weather forcast looks pretty wet and cold Saturday, but warming a little on Mothers Day. I plan on hitting the water around 6:30 am tomorrow to see how long I can handle the 15-20 mph North winds. Might have to hit Prescott early for some captain cokes and hot pizza. Anyone else getting out this weekend?

Dean,
Lakefront Launch had 9 or 10 rigs parked at it today. Is there a tourney or something out there? The sign very clearly says the launch is closed.May 12, 2006 at 2:38 pm #445793I was planning on getting out but with the forecast I may opt out! The weather gods are against me so far this year. Two weeks ago on the Croix opener the weather was similar and while fishing was decent, I’m in no mood to sit through that weather again so soon.
I may try it for a few hours but it may not be worth the $10 launch fee now that Hudson launch is closed.
May 12, 2006 at 2:45 pm #445801Steve,
A friend mentioned there was a tourney on the Croix this weekend, but I have no idea what group is out there. I would be a little nervous launching and parking my truck/trailer at a ramp that is closed. Those boys would be surprised if they came back to find their rigs towed.I think you picked a good weekend to get the “honey do list” done at home.
May 12, 2006 at 3:24 pm #445821it looked like the launch was manned and they were letting them through.
May 12, 2006 at 3:27 pm #445823I’ll be out rain or shine. Since I missed the nice weather last weekend I have to get out there this weekend. I don’t mind the rain and cool temps as long as the wind is manageable.
Maybe those guys out fishing are prefishing for the tournament on the 21st?
May 12, 2006 at 6:39 pm #445934I’m not sure what fishing would be like on the Croix with out rain, I think I have been out once with no rain this year. I am going to opt for the parking lot on water (lacs). Hope I don’t get blown a-shore, good luck on the Croix
BobbyMay 12, 2006 at 7:29 pm #445953Sandbar,
Nice to meet you the other night. I was in the 1850 Fishhawk. I have some work to do tomorrow but will be on the Croix Sunday am . Hopefully the weather will be a little better.
I do not mind Rain, Wind or Cold by themselves or amy combo of two, but when you get all three, that makes for a long day of fishing. Good luck to you Saturday and save a couple for us guys fishing Sunday.
May 12, 2006 at 11:22 pm #446026I’ll be out there early. I think I’ll start up by the Kinne and see what’s up. Say hi, I’m in a black 17′ Crestliner, 140 Johnson 4-stroke.
May 13, 2006 at 12:34 am #446033My front seat is open for saturday morning. Shoot me a PM if interisted. Will be up at before 6 checking the weather. That will determin whats going on for fishing.
May 13, 2006 at 2:06 am #446044I’ll be out there at 6 AM- rain, snow, wind, shine, whatever. It’s like I told the guys at the wedding last weekend when I got up to go after 3 hours of sleep- there are only so many weekends in May every year! I’ll be solo in my green Smokercraft 161 ProMag fishing from the Bluffs down to Prescott, say “Hi” if you’re out. And drop off a beer, as I didn’t get out to the liquor store tonight…..
May 14, 2006 at 12:42 am #446137Fishing was ok today for me. I boated around 15 walleyes and I lost count on the smallmouth totals. Only 2 of the walleyes were legal though. I tried trolling some rocky shorelines and couldn’t keep the smallies away. I also tried pitching some ringworms for walleyes and the bass loved those. Walleyes were being caught on jigs/minnows, crawlers and cranks by people fishing. The water is high, but very fishable. I’m going to try the river again tomorow.
The tourney today was a WWA. It was friday and today.May 14, 2006 at 3:06 am #446144We were going to hit the St.croix but we had a change of plans at 4:00 this morning, my buddy said he couldn’t fish all day so we hit tonka instead, now I kick myself in the for not going, all we caught on tonka were green carp and lots of them. Well theres always next weekend.
May 14, 2006 at 2:14 pm #446171At least you guys got out!
Favorite wifes birthday on Friday…Saturday getting ready for the relatics and mothers day/mother in law coming over today…
I keep telling myself…it’s a long season!
May 15, 2006 at 4:50 am #446262I just got the boat put away and showered. Fished Sunday evening from 6:15 to 10:30. River was at 681.5′ and the water temp a cool 52 degrees. It was cloudy with a gusty NW wind that died down some about 9:00 pm. The river is high and still out of its banks but there doesn’t seem to be much debris floating – most everything has probably washed down by now.
I ended up fishing some backwater spots to get out of the wind – picked up 2 small northerns and 2 nice fat 24″ channel cats on cut sucker. Had something that would grab the bait and hang on and then release near the boat, happened 3 different times, I’m pretty sure it was a gar that wanted that cut sucker. It felt like a nice size fish but I never got a chance to see it.
Twins lost 9-7 but it was a good game. They kept you listening right up until the last out. It was a nice evening but cool – I dressed warm and was glad I did. It was a beautiful night on the river – I didn’t see another boat after 9:00pm.The river reading at Stillwater looks like it is cresting at 681.5′ and ready to start falling again.
May 15, 2006 at 11:54 am #446274Well, I did have plans to hit the Croix last weekend. Our Friday night Walleye fry turned into a small party that lasted until about 1:00 am. The plan changed to getting out on Sunday morning for a while. I woke up Sunday morning around 5:00 am, the rain and wind hitting the house made it very easy to go back to sleep. The chores that were ignored around house for the last few weekends were completed. Hope everyone that made it out found some decent Walleyes.

May 15, 2006 at 12:26 pm #446281We fished out of William O Brian park both days. The bite seemed pretty slow. My favorite presentation of lone linging crankbaits took just a couple of fish. Found a few others anchor in front of log jams and flipping jigs under them. Did hear a few white basss getting caught down by the apple river.
With the water back on the rise travel in this area is still pretty good. The coast gaurd was patoling on saturday so watch out if your running on plane.May 15, 2006 at 1:55 pm #446318Sunday fishing was more of the same for me. Lots of small fish with only one over 15 inches on crawlers. Leeches were getting a few fish too for others.
I noticed a sign at the st croix bluffs park that said that the boat launch will be closed on may 18th.May 15, 2006 at 3:16 pm #446353FTA – I just spoke with the Bluff’s office. They are putting a new “overlay” of asphalt in the ramp parking lot. They are milling or stripping the old asphalt Tuesday and Wednesday, and closing Thursday to put down the new asphalt. They are going to try to be open again by Friday, May 19th.
May 16, 2006 at 1:55 am #446529Saturday morning was good for me, again. Was limited out by 10 AM. I actually liked the weather, it kept the river quiet for the most part. I stayed with my old reliable jig & minnow combo, but I have had to keep moving further up the river to find decent-sized fish. I took a picture because I had to prove to the guys at work that I haven’t been making up stories the last three weekends, so I thought I’d share it with you guys also. I just hope they get the Bluffs launch open by Sunday.
May 16, 2006 at 2:05 am #446531Well, the picture didn’t turn out the greatest, but there are 6 of them there. I think I need to get better at resizing….
May 16, 2006 at 3:46 pm #446710Greg, was that a sauger in your left hand? It looks to have a big belly. I saw your boat down there saturday morning, but didn’t know it was you till I read your post about your boat saturday night. That wind had to make jigging a little tuff down that way. I’ll say hi next time I’m down around prescott.
May 17, 2006 at 2:41 am #446885Fish them all-
It was indeed a sauger, measured about 19″. When I caught it, I figured she had a belly full of shad or something, but when i cut her, I discovered it was still eggs. I was very surprised to find eggs left, I would have figured for sure they’d be spawned out by now. And yes, the wind did make jigging tough, but almost by accident (trolling motor issue), I found that dragging the jigs on long lines behind the boat was better, so I quit trying to stay vertical and went with the long lines. I actually had 3 seperate double-headers within about 20 minutes. Quite a circus for one guy! I imagine with a bite like that I could have switched to a lindy rig, but I really saw no reason to!
What boat do you run? I’ll be out bright and early Sunday AM, so yell if you’re in the area. Otherwise, I monitor ch16 under the “call sign” Bar Bouy. I’ll start down by Prescott and move north if I have to.May 17, 2006 at 4:33 pm #447077Greg, I fish out of a black/grey lunker w/40hp merc. I don’t think i’ll be out sunday due to a nephews baptism. Good luck on Sunday, I’ll probably be out saturday morning.
May 19, 2006 at 1:47 am #447542If you get a chance, let me know how you do. I would go Saturday, but I have to work. I will be there Sunday though.
