I was curious if anyone has explored other areas on the Croix. I have always been curious to try new areas but this year the big question is ICE thickness. I have to believe there are some honey holes untouched. I was thinking of exploring this Friday if conditions allow of course on foot.

You are right, there are untouched spots(at least during the wintertime.)My dad used to fish around catfish point, although it is kind of scary because of the open water where the river narrows. The ice was always thick enough as long as we stayed 300 yards away from the hole in the ice. he also used to fish down near pembles beach. we haven’t been to either spot in years due to the deteriorating winters that have been happening lately.

You won’t find many people around here advocating fishing anything other that the traditional winter spots becasue of the danger and uncertainty. That being said there are many locations that go unfished during the winter. I think access is the main issue since there are so few places to access the river in the winter. Be careful because you’re basically on your own when deciding to fish the uncharted ice on that body of water.

I would need a boat to fish where I usually do this time of year. With the rain last weekend I would put exporing off for a bit if not a year.I dont want to discourage you but the ice is in the worst shape I have ever seen it. Usually I am the guy people think is crazy and right now I wont step foot on 70-80% of the ice I usually fish. Next year is a different story but this year might be shot. Time to pull the boat back out

Thanks for the response. I have friday off and I am going to do a little recon mission to the Croix. If no good ice exists then I will focus on shed hunting. I just can’t believe the proV might hit the Croix still this season.

I cruised down to prescott on friday of last week and made my way up the croix in my pro v. I’ll be heading back down there tomorrow to check the ice condition.

But last week i just looked around, didn’t make my way to far up the river. I’ll take a better look tomorrow and post.

If it were me, I wouldn’t go walking around to much, but if you do, bring a buddy and a good chunk of rope with just in case. And wear a pfd!

Last saturday I was going to hit a spot and after a few steps on the ice I turned around and headed up to the state park on a shed hunt mission.I Came back empty handed but I know I few deer have dropped already. Good luck if you do get out! My buddys dad found a nice 9 pt set last week.

I have heard from four different people that the shed hunting so far has been great. No monsters but some nice respectable scoreable sides. Good luck to all the shed hunters out there. I know the kids love getting out there.

Well, I ran down to prescott yesterday before fishing below the hastings dam. I was able to run a couple of hundred yards until I ran into ice, about 3 – 4 inches thick. The ice is very gray and pitted from the rain.
