can anybody lead me to some source of paint for repainting wooden muskie baits in the off season. Had some banging on the rocks and be nice to have some fun and get them ready for the upcomming season next year.

Dan Larson is a big muskie guy…you could PM him. I’ll check with HAS…they make most of their own lures. I’ll see if I can flag him down when he drives by Monday.

    Thanks Briank

I’d really appreciate it. Not sure how the PM thing works here i am kinda a computer rookie. Guess that i just want the paint to last and be the right kind as long as i am going to do this,,,,,, Do it right or don’t do it at all is my motto. Thanks again

Mark, I didn’t see HAS today…but I’ll keep and eye open for him…

For PM’s watch in the top middle of your screen for a flashing envelope…(a notice that you have an unopened pm) Otherwise click on “MY HOME” and the box in the upper left will notify you too.

This is the same place where you can send a PM. Or, locate a post of the person you would like to pm, click on their handle and at the bottom…there’s a link “Send this user a private message”.

Ps I’ve just sent you one

    Hi mbarron,
I make custom deep diving muskie lures. I use waterborne acrylic paints through a airbrush because of the easy clean up. I source my paint through Dick Blick. They have oils and enamels too.

The secret is in the seal coat. Most manufacturers use the 2 part rod building epoxy called Flexcoat. This is widely used but will not stand up to hardcore use. It’s a little more flexible but doesn’t handle hook wear very well.
I use an industrial 2 part epoxy made by environmental Technologies Inc. they make an Envirotex light, which is commonly used by some lure guys and is available at Menards.
They make many variations and formulas of epoxy. The other thing that’s important is to use an epoxy primer for your base coat to seal the wood. None of these are cheap.

Good Luck, Lure work can be addictive.

Hooks is right about the process, however if you just want to do some touch-up on a couple wounded baits, Trail’s End Pro Bass in Fridley has a pretty large selection of paint. Sealing the paint is the most important part, whether you use epoxy or just multiple coats of urethane, for the paint to last more than one day out it has to be properly sealed.

    Hey

Thanks guys for your expertise in the paint business. I am going to try Trails End and also visti Menards for some expoy. I really appreciate the information and now realize about the sealing. I’d never thought of that Happy Holidays
