Wondering if anyone out on the St. Croix has hooked into a Musky? I’m going to be targeting ALOT more rivers this year and wanted to know if anybody will give up a few areas to try?

The guys on the Sippi’ thread are gonna see this as well.

    Thanks!

    Steve,
I’m hearing that more and more muskies are showing up on the lower ‘Croix. I’ve yet to catch one out there myself. I’ve seen a couple of nice pictures in the Pioneer Press. I hear where the Apple comes into the ‘Croix is supposed to be good. I’ve had great success on the Flambeau River. If you want more info drop me a p.m.
If you want to chase them on the ‘Croix, give me a shout. I’ve got a boat and all the gear.

Hey Steve’s sounds like you need someone to go out with you and get some evidence (photo’s). I would be happy to lend a hand at that. LOL. Now which kind of St.Croix rods do you guy’s use. I need to pick up a couple of them as I’m going after some monsters this year muskies and sturgeons. I have a friend that swears by his 8 foot ST.Croix rods for muskies but I was thinking a 7 foot. I plan on mostly throwing large Salmo baits and maybe a hog wobbler or something similar. Steve

    Comenchero,

It may be that the picture is too big. The size of the .jpg file must be under 100 K (or 100,000 bites) Check the properties of the file to see the photo .jpg size. If it’s too big, bring the photo into your photo editor. (Many different brands of photo editors are out there) Check in the tools menu and select “Re-Size” Reduce the size to under 100K and save it, then try adding it one more time. The first time is always the hardest…

Hey there guys. I picked up my first muskie on the Riv this past summer. I chased them quite a bit this summer with a few more in the boat. I have always found that if you find weeds the hogs are not far away. Or if you prefer trolling find the bait fish and there are sure to be hogs under them patrolling! This fish in the pic went 41″ on a 90 degree day!

    Comenchero,

The size of your pic was well below 100K so I’m not sure what’s up???

I’ll try to post it here. See above attachment….

Worked for me. I’ll take a closer look at this to see if I can’t spot what’s causing the problem on that muskie pic.

I think I figured it out. Its in the way the file was named…. you can call a file “steve musky 23” locally on your hard drive and you’ll be able to save and re-visit that file any time you’d like but for web use, blank spaces are hard to resolve. Notice our upload system did attempt to resolve things by dropping in “%” in those blank spaces but the result was it still through the error. Re-name the file to steve_musky_23 or something similar, no blank spaces, and give it a whirl. It will work, I guarantee it!

Thanks for your patience with this guys.

I just checked the folder on our server that our upload system loads files to… your photos aren’t making it to the sever. My suggestion would be to change the name to something simple, like croixmuskie.jpg and try it. I’ll keep monitoring things to help get this to work. Keep trying…!

Touch Down! And a super nice fish to make the effort worth the wait!~ That’s all it was, a file name that didn’t follow naming conventions suitable for web use.

For everyone else, when you run into a problem like this, re-name the file by removing ALL blank spaces, special characters, etc. I personally recommend using the underscores “_” in place of a blank space. That method will always work. Also, keep those names short…. in checking the folder on our server, there were some really long names that I’m almost positive would cause an error due to the length and use of special characters, dates and a combination of slashes, commas, etc.

Thanks for toughing this out with us Comanchero. It was a good exercise for us all..!

    Steve and SteveO,

If you guys are up for braving some cold, muskies are open on the Croix until the end of MN’s season and the King’s Power Plant area never freezes. I hear plenty of rumors but have yet to test it myself.

I’ve got a pair of Rapala muskie rods that I like for handling the “fishing” part of fishing…………….haven’t had anything worthy of calling a true test though. One is 6’9″ and the other is 7’6″. Also have a pair of Quantums that would do the trick. No model name but 7’6″ and stiff enough to handle lures 3oz. and under.

    Comanchero15,
How far did you go into the bay? How much ice did you have down there? I was thinking of hitting the bay but the culverts on the north end are still open. Just curious how much ice is down there. Thanks for any input!

Well. I fish a lot by the dam in Taylors Falls for musky, on the Minnesota side. I haven’t seen one musky caught down there less than 40 inches, the only problem is boats are very hard to get down there. So it is strictly shore fishing. I have seen 6 musky attack my musky baits this year, and my friend got 2 follows. There are some giants down there. My personal best is 44. I saw many down there last year, also. Most of the fish I’ve seen are on a shallow strip of rocks, next to a giant rock sitting in the middle of the water, and points. But I would say from below the dam in Taylors Falls down to Oceola is prime. Good luck, and sorry for a reply that’s a little late. Tight lines!!

Wife and I were a Judge team a few years ago in the PMT tourney held on the Croix. Range from Stillwater to Prescott, no live bait. 49 catch/photo/release, 1 killed. only 1 was kinni to Prescott, 4 w/in 3 miles of Afton, about 8 north to I-94 (4 over 49?) the rest from Hudson north. Yes, the Croix can be a productive fishery. Putting them in your boat is the challenging part.
Personal choices St Croix 7′ to 8′. 7 is good all around, but 8 gives more leverage to throw the heavy stuff and helps do better figure 8. Everybody has their own personal choice of lures, just ask around. Happy Hunting.
