I hit the river around sun up saturday morning for some walleye/sauger action. I hit a couple areas and found some active fish in 14-18 feet of water on a windblown shoreline. The sauger and walleye were biting well until the sun made it over the trees. Then the silvers started hitting more. I used mainly a jig/minnow. I should have broke out the plastics to save some time baiting my hooks, but I was having fun with live bait. There were a lot of short bites, but I still managed to hook enough fish. Most of the fish were not hitting very agressively, instead you would just feel some weight on the line. More typical of the sauger than the silvers and walleye. Sunday was a bit different with the northwest wind churning up the river. I still managed some sauger and one walleye, but the bites weren’t as often. On sunday I did fish further south on the river and not the same areas as saturday. The silvers were still biting as well on sunday. It seemed on sunday the crankbaits were putting out more fish for those out trolling. It seems this fall, more than others, that I am catching more smaller sized white bass. Anybody else observe this? I caught one about 5 inches long, which is probably the smallest one I’ve ever caught on the croix. Only about 4 or 5 that I caught were those bigger 14-15 inch fish I usually get in the fall.
