08 26 05 The variety on Lower St. Croix River keeps going – Walleye, white bass, sauger, sheepshead, sturgeon, smallmouth bass, sunfish, crappies, catfish (both channels and flatheads) as well a buffalo and even gar are being caught in depths where most angels are trying to catch walleye. This variety is a real treat for relaxed anglers looking to see all the fish species the river has to offer. Walleyes continue to be caught in depths of 18 to 27 feet of water, and many schools of walleye are no doubt suspending right now. Trolling spinners, livebait rig drifting, or trolling crankbaits all will catch walleye. Schools are harder to locate than previous weeks, so work lots of spots for success. Smallmouth hit plastics, crankbaits, and livebait. Slow dragging plastics turn the scrappy smallmouth, search deep in the day for them. Nightcrawler fishing will turn the fish when you are looking for variety. White bass fishing seems more hit and miss lately. The river is at 675.22 feet above sea level in Stillwater, Minnesota. The water temperature on the surface is 74 degrees and cooling the clarity is good.
On a side note I went out today for a brief fishing outing and caught a 24″ eye, my friend Shale caught a bunch of eyes as well rigging. Hard to say if the walleye bite has improved or the weather had the eyes biting better, but as a fact the river produces in the dog days of summer.
Once the variety show closes the eyes should kick in and go on the Chew just in time for the RVR RAT TOURNY!
Keep Catchin’
