smallie action

Fished yesterday morning and part of the afternoon chasing smallies and walleyes. I had good luck throwing a jig with a firecracker ringworm for the bass. Caught numerous 12-13 inch fish a few 14-15 inchers and one 17 incher on this presentation. It was amazing to see those little 7-8 inch fish engulf the ringworms too. Saw some smallies chasing minnows on the surface and so I tossed out a silver/black rapala. This caught a nice fighting 15 inch smallmouth. My biggest smallie came using a leech on a lindy rig fishing for walleyes. It was a jumping for joy, fat, 18 inch fish. Had a tough go getting the walleyes to hit in the afternoon in my usual spots. Caught two short fish and some smallies. Anybody hammer the walleyes yesterday?

No hammering of the walleye. I had a great smallie day also. 3 in twister tail on a jig. An added chunk of crawler on the jig coaxed the bigger fish to bite. 1 short walleye all day. sheepers were active. no white bass yet. Oh yeah, 1 really nice black crappie.

    Fish them all

I think I met you yesterday while getting rained on. I was in the black lund with a springer spaniel riding shotgun. Saw you in the no wake zone.

18fisher, I was pretty jealous of your rig with the canopy when I was getting poured on briefly. Sorry about Ally barking at you and your fishing buddy, she’s usually pretty friendly. She might have been a little cranky from getting up at 5 am and not getting her mid-day nap. The walters ever turn on for you later in the day?

I am going to be heading out there this coming weekend and wondering if anyone has any new reports on the smallie action and the baits that work?
    thanks!

I was out the 11th & 12th, and picked up a few smallies jigging/rigging for eyes in 11-14 fow. Crawlers got 3, leeches 1 until the sheepies moved in
I threw an X-rap towards shore for a little while, to try out the new “hot bait” and caught two more. The key there was the let the bait sit for 3-4 seconds in between twitches, they weren’t taking anything agressively.
I haven’t seen them busting bait on the surface in shallow at all, but I’m assuming the warm-up will probably help with that.
