Substitute “North American” River for “St. Croix” if you’d like!
05/09/05 St. Croix River walleye fishing is good, though you have to work for them. Walleyes are becoming more active as the weather warms up. Water temperatures are just starting to rise and are 52 to 53 degrees. In early April the water temperature was all most 46 degrees on the Mississippi, and at opener that water was still just a few degrees warmer than that. Essentially this is the first temperature rise in over three weeks and the fish seem to be responding. Over the weekend anglers reported much larger catches with a 28” walleye being caught as well as some between 25 and 26”. These larger fish are not common but, it’s a good sign. The size of the St. Croix walleyes is excellent and 18 and 22-23 “inch fish are common. Livebait rigs, spinners, and crankbaits are all turning fish from 10 to 24 feet. White bass are still active and the smallmouth have also started to hit (smallmouth are closed until May 29th, this is just a report on fish activity and does not condone fishing for smallmouth). Sheeps are also active. Catfish are still an uncommon catch. The Croix is 676.72 feet above sea level, and running fairly clear.
Q: “What does good fishing, but you have work for them mean?”
A: It means if you put your time in you’ll have lots of good walleyes at the end of the day to release or to keep a few for the hot grease release.
