Was out on the river at Bayport this afternoon. I got out there late, about 2:00. Moved around alot, fished near Anderson point. Caught a few white bass on the MN side in the channel (jig & minnow) no eyes or saugers. Still better than work! Ran into Briank and putz at the beach. Brian told me about in-depth angling, so I am a new Lurker!

Whoaa! Tim!
I didn’t see your post…(was it first grade when I was taught to Stop, Look and Listen?!)
We’ll have to hook up when ever the fish figure out it’s dinner time and trade some cat stories…
I know this good one about two guys in a boat (well known walleye fishing guides) fishing for cat’s in the dark with …I’ll save it for on the river!
Welcome!
December 30, 2004 at 10:52 am #333968On the WI side Putz and I worked our tails off for 7 crappies of mixed size. All the folks fishing on this side were reporting poor results.
It was a hard day of ice rods. Putz had one break early in the day… and as I was reeling in to go home, I heard a snap..line either froze to the tip or the line was tangled…snapped the end right of…
I had such a good time with Putz…I didn’t careOne thing I did learn…Strikemaster augers really cut through the ice…and venison sausage and candy cane drinks go real well together..
Ps…thanks for kicking my butt ice fishing again this year…it must be the smell of lye on your hands….
January 1, 2005 at 10:42 pm #334315There was no butt kicking with that few of fish, but we should try it again sometime. I don’t think we have drank the Phillips company dry yet.
January 6, 2005 at 5:57 pm #335117Its my first post, so the attachment is just a test.
I fished the Minnesota side near Bayport from 11 AM to 3:30 PM on Jan-5. The ice was in good shape and measured around 14″ where I fished.
I fished shallower and used a camera to watch what was happening. I didn’t see any ‘eyes but I did see lots of sluggish/dying shad and surprisingly quite a few small Perch. I can imagine a tough Walleye & Sauger bite with so many easy-to-eat shad flopping around.
Some cars and trucks were driving on the river but I don’t know the ice conditions across the middle. I didn’t drive on it.
What technique have you guys used to trigger Walleyes to bite? I have been working a pattern (infrequently) over the past couple of years where I can see quite a few nice Walleyes approach my bait but will not bite until dusk.
January 6, 2005 at 7:35 pm #335140I can olny speak for myself but the eyes usually dont turn on till the last 40 minutes of light. We do catch a few earlier but %90 are in a 30min-1hour window. A bobber with a “plain” hook not a colored one will get a few to hit earlier but most of them are smaller saugs.Seems like colored hooks spook them a little when there in lockjaw mode.As soon as they get real active a colored hook with a red bead or two works good for along with jign raps and spoons on the other line to get there attention.
January 7, 2005 at 4:51 am #335240Welcome Mr FishingScout…your test went well…but your mug shot isn’t working too good…you can send your picture to photosatin-depthangling dot com…along with your user name and they will fix you up…
Bushman nailed it…they are there…they look…but that’s it.
January 11, 2005 at 10:43 pm #336097Fished around Bayport today. I started near the tip of the point by Anderson Bay. I started in 12 feet and moved out to about 15 feet. I moved some fish so I dropped a camera and saw & caught Bluegills.
I moved up to the day marker on the Wisconin side north of the “hole”. I drilled and fished about 30 holes from 14 feet down to 32 feet. I did move some fish off the bottom in 30 feet but no bites. I also saw some fish move through about 10 feet off the bottom; Crappies or Whitebass I suppose.
I finished by spending a half hour in the “hole” and quit around 3 PM. I did see some fish near the bottom in about 26 feet, so I missed the hole but I didn’t have enough time to move around and find it.
