Jim Merimonte recently landed and released a huge flathead weighing 59 pounds! Jim fishes for these predators, and has caught very big flatheads in the past but this must be up there in his top two? I haven’t talked to Jim but I saw the weigh in record, and the photo as documented for the Beanie Big Louie Contest (not to be confused with the River Rat Tournament), I think this is the third largest flathead ever recorded in the Big Louie contest. The Big Louie has claim to not one but two state record fish (sturgeon and flathead), that’s impressive.

Even more interesting is that this fish was caught in the day?! All accounts so far look this way, as again I haven’t talked to Jim but Gary Mau at Beanies Bait shop did, and he said the fish was caught in the day! I guess fishing rules ARE meant to be broken. So congrats Jim!

Daytime flatheading isn’t really anything all that special, plenty of my friends do it as a rule, I dabble in it…have never gotten anything close to that trophy, I personally know of two hundred pound class fish taken during the day…in fact this particular guy won’t fish at night unless boat traffic forces him to. It’ll catch on as people learn it’s finer points.

I spent a couple week going for cats this year and never went at night. I was olny able to go down after work on weeknights but had a blast. Some night we would olny get channels but when they came in it was solid action for about an hour.I cought 8 flats and about 15-20 channels in about 10 night down there. Most hit from 6-7pm and then the shut off till I left about 9pm.The biggest was just about 40 lbs but most were under 10 lbs. Next year I am going to spend a few night but this years just about shot with deer hunting allready started.

I would love to see a picture of that monster!!!
I was going to post a pic of mine but in the daylight it too easy to see my little honey hole.
