Good Spring Bite

Normally I’m one to criticize the St. Croix as I’ve never had much success on the bigger fish. And I can go out there and throw up an “airball” as often as not.

But to give credit when credit is due, the St. Croix has been fun to fish this spring. Outside of a mid-week evening trip when the water was very dirty, these last three weekends have produced some good eater sized fish.

    Here are some pics,
    1) A buddy holding some eaters from Memorial Weekend
    2) A quick six from June 1st
    3) My biggest of the year to date, from June 7th.

The first two weekends it was all leadcore for me, this weekend the leadcore was dead so I moved in shallower, using same shad raps (hot tiger and fire tiger) caught several in 12-14 FOW.

Enjoy the bite, while it lasts!

I was out Friday afternoon and it was dead for me. I hope to get out this week if Beanies isn’t still flooded or the no wake is pulled.

Looks like you had a great time. The bites always there, some days you just have to work for it now. It was my home water for ten years. But with moving farther out I won’t hit as much. That river is a great fishery.

I’m curious to know how u have your lead core set-up? I have been running leadcore setups on mile lacs the last few years but would really like to turn and fish close to home with lead. I trolled up there with a 50 foot leader, I’m guessing your leader is smaller but I was hoping I wouldn’t have to chamge my setup much cause I still like heading upthere when I have the time. You can pm me if you want just curious

    Thanks

Beanies was very flooded but if you’re ready for it, no problem. From the corner of the house on it’s in the water. But just pull into lot (yes in the water) get out in your shorts no shoes, pay and put in as normal. You just have to wade through the water, but it’s now warm enough.

My leadcore setup is a full 10 colors of lead on line counter reels. You can count colors if you like but fishing alone it is tough to count on two hands (and toes).

I use a short leader, 6′ or so. St. Croix water is clean but it’s stained (tanic I believe its called) so this is one reason for shorter leader. Plus, average fish are in 15″ range.
Mille Lacs I’m guessing the fish are bigger and water is clearer, so longer leader to not spook and to have some stretch on the bigger fish is good. Just my opinion though.

X2 on that leadcore setup. 10 colors, 6′ leader, Long 9′ rod. Seems the fish have been very color specific this spring. We caught the majority of ‘eyes around Hudson on the brown crawfish shad rap. I don’t understand it, but whatever puts fish in the boat…
